Update 8:00 a.m. - Marietta Police: Cobb Pkwy re-opened, but ramp from Cobb Pkwy to Canton Rd Conn. northbound will be closed temporarily during mid-morning hours.
A truck carrying sodium hydroxide overturned around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Industrial Park Drive and Cobb Parkway, just south of Canton Road, prompting some evacuations in Marietta.
Marietta Police said just under 50,000 pounds of the chemical was actively leaking from the truck as of 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. The nearby Hometown Inn on Cobb Parkway and several other businesses were evacuated. The northbound lanes of Cobb Parkway could remain closed until 9 a.m. today, according to Marietta Police spokesman David Baldwin.
Sodium hydroxide is commonly known as lye. It is a highly corrosive chemical that can cause chemical burns to eyes and skin. The truck’s driver, employed by Tennessee Commercial Warehouse Inc. out of Nashville, was not injured.
