With at least two games left before it’s forced to close up shop, Southern Poly’s baseball team learned its initial fate for the NAIA World Series.

The eighth-seeded Hornets (45-17) will feature in the opening game of the tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, facing ninth-seeded Tabor College (49-11) on May 23 at noon (9 a.m. Pacific).

The 10-team, double-elimination World Series will continue until a champion is crowned May 29 or May 30.

Southern Poly is making its third trip to the World Series, following previous appearances in 1986 and 2009. It will also be its final trip to the tournament, with the Hornets’ athletic department shutting down in advance of the university’s consolidation with Kennesaw State.

Southern Poly punched its ticket to Lewiston after beating host Embry-Riddle on Thursday in a winner-take-all game of the opening-round tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Tabor is making its first appearance in the World Series. The Bluejays advanced from their own opening-round tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

The winner of the Southern Poly-Tabor game will play the following day against No. 1 seed Oklahoma Baptist, which has a first-round bye, as does No. 2 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

No. 3 Oklahoma Wesleyan will face No. 6 Georgia Gwinnett on the opening day, No. 4 Faulkner (Ala.) will face No. 5 Georgetown (Ky.) and No. 7 San Diego Christian will face No. 10 Cumberland (Tenn.).

Georgia Gwinnett is making its World Series debut as a second-year program. The Grizzlies’ senior third baseman is Robbie Payne, a former Kennesaw Mountain High School standout batting .286 on the season with 14 doubles and 45 RBIs.
