Unstoppable? Yes, they were! Smyrna Blue then went undefeated (5-0) in the District 5 Georgia Recreation and Park Association tournament held in Dalton to become the 2012 G.R.P.A. District 5 Champs to qualify for the State tournament. The team went (4-1) in the State tournament held in Savannah and beat two teams that were 30–0 to become the 2012 G.R.P.A state champs finishing 18-2!
Team members include Bryce Archie, Latrell Bullard, Tristen Jensen, Avery Obert, Aidan Daly, Logan Givens, Josh Katz, Jacob Lange, Tyler Minnick, Davis McCravy, Cole Peterson, Drew Robinson and Duncan Santos. Coaches are Broddrick Archie, John Jensen, Derrick McCravy and Erik Peterson.
Harrison Hoyas will have its 2012 junior league basketball tryouts for girls fifth through eighth grades and boys sixth through eighth grades at Harrison High School Gym at 4500 Due West Road in Kennesaw.
Fifth- and sixth-grade girls tryouts are Aug. 25 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., followed by seventh- and eighth-grade girls from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tryouts for all boys are from 1 to 3 p.m.
On Aug. 26, fifth- and sixth-grade girls will tryout from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by seventh- and eighth-grade girls from 3 to 4 p.m. All boys will tryout from 4 to 6 p.m.
Players must attend either or both of these sessions. Players advancing to the second round of tryouts will be posted on the website by the evening of Aug. 27. Those players will need to come back for the final tryouts on Sept. 9. Teams will be posted Sept. 10.
If selected for the team, there will be a player/parent meeting on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Harrison High School cafeteria. There will be a $395 registration fee and $100 refundable concession deposit will be due that evening. Students will also need to provide a 2012-13 sports physical, copy of birth certificate, proof of residency, and proof of current school attendance. Players will be fitted for uniforms and shoes at the meeting.
