In the mood for a great chicken salad sandwich? Visit Tommy's Sandwich Shop at 148 Roswell St. in Marietta, across from the southeast corner of the Marietta Square at the intersection of Atlanta Road.

"Our most popular (sandwich) is the homemade chicken salad sandwich," owner Tommy Smith said.

Tommy's homemade chicken salad served on soft, fresh bread has the perfect mix of mayonnaise, celery and spice. It's so perfect that once you try the sandwich, you'll probably be like many who crave it.

In addition to chicken salad, Tommy's offers a variety of other traditional sandwiches made fresh to order. Egg salad, stacked beef, ham, or turkey, pastrami, salami, pimento cheese and a Reuben are a sample of Tommy's fare.

"Everything is made fresh. We slice the meats fresh daily and the bread and produce comes in daily," said Smith who worked part time in a deli in Atlanta while in college. Offered a management position, he ran the deli by day and attended school by night.

"I enjoyed (the deli) and learned a lot and started looking for my own shop," he said.

Tommy's made its presence on the Square 32 years ago. Smith purchased his shop from a gentleman who owned it for one-and-a-half years. "I changed the name and the menu and it became Tommy's," Smith said.

Not only does Tommy's consistently good food draw the daily crowd from the courthouse and surrounding businesses, the restaurant is a favorite because of its reasonable prices. The average customer spends $6 for a sandwich and drink, Tommy said. Most sandwiches include chips and a pickle.

"I think (Tommy's) is one of the best and best prices on the Square as far as value for the dollar," Smith said.

Tommy's is also open for breakfast, serving sausage, chicken and bacon biscuits, bagels, danishes and muffins.

It is also owner-operated - if the shop is open, Smith is there. "I am here every day. I strive to keep the costs down as far as overhead and expenses and keep the quality good," Smith said.

Tommy's is open for breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
