Prep roundup: Pope rolls over Cambridge

Pope pounded out 14 hits and scored at least two runs in five innings en route to a crucial 12-7 Region 7AAAAA victory over Cambridge on Saturday. The win leaves the Greyhounds atop the region standings.

Nathan Shiflett was 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored for the Greyhounds (12-6, 11-2) who have won seven of their last eight games. Patrick Wiseman and Stephen Skruck each batted 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, Nathaniel Lowe hit 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Johnny Flading was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Pope scored three times in the first and twice in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Skruck (3-1) allowed three runs — one earned — on three hits, while striking out five and walking two in four innings. Cambridge scored three times in the third and seventh innings.

Girls Lacrosse

Walton 13, Westminster 13: Walton made an incredible comeback in the championship round of the Dogwood Classic against host Westminster on Saturday, but had to settle for a tie.

The Lady Raiders trailed 7-1 at one point and 10-4 at the half before rallying. In the second half, Walton scored nine of the next 12 goals to even the score. Kyleigh Holthouse scored the game-tying goal with 30 seconds left.

Westminster led the entire game prior to Walton’s final score.

Laura Jordan was named tournament MVP and Erin McBride got the all-tournament team award.

McBride led with five goals. Carly White added two goals with five players scoring one goal each.

Emily James had nine saves at goal.

Walton won 17-12 over Upper Arlington (Ohio) in the semifinals earlier in the day.
