Prep Roundup: Pope 13-for-13 in sectional

Twenty-six wrestlers — 13 from Pope, two from Sprayberry, four from Kell and six from Allatoona — advanced out of the Class AAAAA sectionals and into the upcoming state finals in Macon.

Pope, which advanced all 13 of the wrestlers in began the sectional with, had five first-place finishers at Loganville — Tyler Haskin (126 pounds), Jake Henson (152), Billy Meek (160), Brooks Climmons (182) and Trevor Stevens (195).

Placing second were T.J. Collins (132) and Joey Tabachino (220), while Preston Markwell (120) was third. Taylor Howard (285), Davis Burson (138) and Sam Skinner (113) were fourth, Josh Tazzetta (106) was fifth and Zeke Weber (170) placed seventh.

The 13 state-qualifiers are the most for Pope in one season.

Also advancing from the Loganville sectional were Kell’s Matthew Springfield, who was second at 113, and Kerry Louis, who placed third at 145. The Longhorns’ Tristan Smith (152) and Calvin Irby (160) finished fifth and seventh, respectively.

Sprayberry freshman Jacob Speeth and senior Thomas Cook also moved on. Speeth was fifth at 132 pounds, while Cook was the 152-pound runner-up.

Allatoona, which hosted its own sectional, saw Jack Woods (120) and Cody Webb (182) win their weight classes. Also qualifying were Ethan Benedict (113), Logan Southard (126), A.J. Cagle (138) and Will Kemp (152). Benedict was third, Southard fifth, Cagle eighth and Kemp second.

Mount Paran makes history: The Eagles’ second-year program made history after qualifying wrestlers to the state finals for the first time.

Mount Paran advanced Cole Spain (160), Matt McKenzie (170) and Scotty Valiani (285) out of the Class A sectional at Darlington. All three qualified fourth in their respective weight classes.

Walker also found success as Jason Schubert and William Schubert were the runners-up at 138 and 132 pounds, respectively. Jordan Schoettler and Jason Lill finished third at 145 and 195, respectively.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Kell 44, Forsyth Central 40:
The Longhorns made free throws down the stretch to hold on for a victory in the opening round of the Region 7AAAAA tournament at Sprayberry.

Kell (9-17) advanced to face Pope in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Maurice Summerour led Kell with 14 points and Grant Bryant added 13. Jalen Green scored nine points.

The Longhorns led 22-14 at the half, but they allowed the Bulldogs back in the game in the third when they were outscored by 10.

Kell was able to take a seven-point lead with 6 minutes left in the game and held on from there.

Whitefield Academy 77, Greenville 54: The Wolfpack easily won their regular-season finale on the road.

Berto Dryden had 11 points and 10 assists for Whitefield (14-9), while Eric Lockett totaled 25 points — including 12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter — and added 13 rebounds. Brendan Myles chipped in with 17 points.

The Wolfpack made 29 of 36 free throws, compared to 10 of 17 for Greenville.

Whitefield will begin the Region 6A tournament Tuesday at Mount Paran.
