Prep Roundup: Lowndes comes back late, beats Marietta girls in OT

For the first three quarters, Marietta kept Lowndes’ leading scorer in check.

Unfortunately, the Lady Blue Devils still had 12 minutes to play.

Tasha Brown scored 13 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lift the Vikettes to a 53-44 win in the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals Wednesday.

Lowndes advanced to play Archer in Saturday’s semifinals at Georgia Tech.

With 1 minute to play, Marietta led

36-32 until Brown banked in a 3-pointer and was fouled. The free throw tied the game.

However, the Lady Blue Devils (21-9) regained the lead 40-37 and were at the foul line shooting two free throws to put the game away with 16 seconds to play. They missed both free throws and then fouled Brown again while she was shooting a 3-pointer. Brown made all three free throws to send the game to overtime.

Marietta was only 4-of-12 on free throws in the fourth quarter.

Kayla Wilson led the Lady Blue Devils with 13 points, Chandler Warren finished with nine and Asia Blu Wilson added eight.

Holy Innocents’ 72, Mount Paran Christian 51: Que Morrison scored 22 points but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Eagles fell in the quarterfinals of the Class A private-school state playoffs.

Undefeated Holy Innocents’ advanced to face Darlington on Monday in the semifinals at Kennesaw State.

Renee VanHorn scored 10 points and Caroline Ethridge added five points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Mount Paran finishes the season at 20-6.


Harrison 4, Union Grove 3:
Hunter Fortner’s single in the bottom of the seventh scored Tyler Elkins with the game-winning run as the Hoyas earned a non-region victory.

Harrison (3-0) scored three runs over the last two innings. It was the 297th career victory for coach Mark Elkins.

Fortner went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Tanner Weeks was 2-for-3.

Chandler Firestine pitched three innings of two-hit, one-run ball to earn the win.

Walton 8, Pope 1: The Raiders took advantage of Pope’s miscues to stay undefeated.

The Greyhounds committed seven errors, allowing Walton (5-0) to score eight runs despite limited offense. Luke Manzo led the Raiders effort, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chase Burks pitched five innings, allowed two hits, two walks, one earned run while striking out three.

Kell 4, Stephenson 2 (Susp.): Kell couldn’t count a win on Wednesday night, as its game at Stephenson was called in the fourth inning after the lights behind home plate went out.

Andrew Mitchell had an RBI double just before the contest was stopped. Chris Lacero allowed three hits and had three strikeouts on the mound.

Mount Pisgah Christian 7, North Cobb Christian 1: The Eagles had the Region 6A game deadlocked at 1-all through six innings, before the Patriots ran away with six more runs.

Chris Sander gave North Cobb Christian (3-1, 0-1) its lone run with an RBI double in the second.

The Eagles will host Walker on Friday for another region game.


Pebblebrook 1, Osborne 1:
The Falcons and Cardinals played to a non-region tie.

Pebblebrook (0-0-2) has now opened the season with two straight ties.

Eduardo Garcia scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while goalkeeper Edgar Cortes recorded five saves.

Late Tuesday

Mount Paran Christian 10, Excel 0:
Alex Garnatt scored a hat-trick to help the Eagles earn an Area 7A victory.

Ryan Moran, Joon Choi, Taylor Dunn, Matthew Harrison, Cooper Ingram and Joe D’Ambola each added a goal.


Campbell 3, Wheeler 2:
Delanie Turner scored two goals to lead Campbell to its first win of the season. Caroline Woodard added a goal and Maria Fernandez recorded four saves for the Lady Spartans.


Late Tuesday

Kell 15, River Ridge 2:
The Llerandi brothers led the way for the Longhorns in the Area 2AAAAA (A) romp.

Devin Llerandi had five goals and an assist, while Alex Llerandi had an active night with three goals and four assists.

Noah Swift added three goals and an assist, with Conner Cook and Skylar Abbott each totaling a goal and an assist.

Luke Harris and Avery Brown combined to make seven saves for Kell (1-2, 1-2).


Walton 25, Cherokee 1:
Ten players scored as the Lady Raiders dominated the Area 2AAAAAA game.

Erin McBride and Riley Ewing each scored five goals, while Hunter Corvin had a prolific game with three goals and six assists.

Carly White and Meaghan Butler also had three goals, while Isabelle Snider scored twice.

Emily Jones and Kathryn Sweeden saved three shots between them for Walton (2-0-1, 1-0).

Kell 22, Darlington 2: The Lady Longhorns had 11 girls score as they rolled to an Area 2A-AAAAA victory.

Jessica Armstrong scored four goals, Izzy Palermo had three goals and three assists, Sarah Bialicky scored two goals with an assist, while Jennifer Buckley and Haley Swift scored two goals each.

Kell will host Mill Creek on Tuesday.


Marietta 5, Sprayberry 0:
Zachary Garrison, David Ho and Matthew Efromov swept the singles matches as the Blue Devils rolled to a non-region win.

Garrison won 6-0, 6-1, Ho 6-3, 6-4 and Efromov 6-0, 6-1. Jackson Mitchell and Marcos Brito won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Charley Tripp and Neal Majors won 6-4, 6-3.

Lovett 5, Walker 0: Kian Roshani, Clay Jones and William Blakely all fell in the singles for Walker, while Jake Shore and Rob Walsh and Trey Tumlin and Ian Resmondo lost in the doubles.

Pope 4, Allatoona 1: Pope swept the singles matches and split doubles to improve to 4-0 on the season. Austin Bates won 6-0, 6-0 while Dom Allan and Michael Busby each won 6-2, 6-1.

Mark Fisher and Matt White won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Allatoona’s lone victory came from Keenan Shaw and Justin Cumbie won won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

McEachern 4, East Paulding 1: The Indians prevailed in a prorated non-region match.

Robert Brown and Linden Charles each won 8-4 supersets in the singles.

Remy DeCoux and Matthew Brown won 9-7 and Alizae Chubbs and Arron Rann won 8-2 in doubles.


Walton 4, Starr’s Mill 1:
The doubles teams of Katie Riley and Jessica Cramer along with Johanna Keeline and Grace Gaskins each won matches 6-0, 6-0 to lead the Lady Raiders to a non-region victory.

Bella Kuse won 6-4, 7-5 and Suzanne Zenoni 6-1, 7-5 in singles.

Walton (4-0) will travel to Woodstock today.

Allatoona 5, Pope 0: The Lady Buccaneers swept the Lady Greyhounds to improve to 3-0.

Kennedy Craig won 6-1, 6-1, Ali Whitley 7-5, 6-0 and Haley Proctor 6-1, 6-1 in singles.

Melanie Whitley and Lauren Lees won 6-0, 7-6 (3), and Marisha Larosa and Erin Neaves won 6-3, 6-4 in doubles.
