Prep Roundup: Lady Mustangs sweep to Columbus

Kennesaw Mountain swept Tift County, 3-1 and 6-1, in the second round of Class AAAAAA state playoffs Wednesday and advanced to next week’s state finals in Columbus.

The Lady Mustangs (26-6) had five hits and scored twice in the fourth inning of Game 1 to hold off the Lady Blue Devils, who scored in the top of the seventh.

Madi Lewis was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double, while Amber Johns batted 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fourth. Kennesaw Mountain added an insurance run in the sixth.

Kathryn Woody gave up one unearned run on four hits and struck out 10. She also had a double in Game 1 and improved to 26-6 on season after also picking up the victory in the nightcap.

Tift County took a 1-0 second-inning lead in Game 2, but Kennesaw Mountain rallied for two runs in the third, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth behind a 10-hit effort.

Malea Bell was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a fifth-inning home run. Kayla Aarons was 2-for-3 with a two-out RBI single in the third. Lexi Bates hit a two-out RBI in the fifth and Lewis batted 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Woody doubled and allowed one unearned run off five hits and struck out 10.

Harrison 4-2, East Coweta 3-0: The Lady Hoyas rallied for a victory in Game 1 and posted a shutout in Game 2 to win its Class AAAAAA second-round playoff series and advance to the elite eight in Columbus next week.

Harrison (26-7) scored the tying run in the top of sixth, but East Coweta answered to take a 3-1 advantage in the bottom half of the frame.

Brooke Taylor and Bridgette Rainey led off the seventh with back-to-back singles. Maddie Davenport ran for Rainey at first, and a groundout advanced the runners.

Taylor scored off a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 3-2 before Lindley Bruce walked and Kellie Carroll hit a ground ball to first that was misplayed and allowed Davenport to score from third to tie the contest.

Carroll was safe at first due to the error. Mikenzie Vaughn then bunted to load the bases and Rachel Farris hit an RBI ground out to second, which scored Bruce with the go-ahead run.

Rainey (11-5), who gave up three earned runs off seven hits and struck out five, stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the victory.

Vaughn was 2-for-4, while Sierra Maddox and Taylor batted 2-for-3.

Game 2 saw Taylor launch a second-inning home run and Maddox blast a sixth-inning bomb to give Harrison the victory.

Vaughn batted 2-for-3.

Emily Kachel (10-1) earned the shutout off four hits and 10 strikeouts.

Pope 3-4, Heritage-Conyers 0-3: The Lady Greyhounds earned a return trip to Columbus for the Class AAAAA elite eight by sweeping a doubleheader.

Pope (28-9) got two complete-game pitching performances from ace Kelly Barnhill. She shut out Heritage in Game 1, allowing four hits and striking out 11, and followed it with a two-hitter in Game 2 while striking out 10.

The Lady Greyhounds were tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning in Game 2 when Megan Metzinger started a one-player rally. She singled to start the inning, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home with what became the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Lindsey Monkiewicz was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Lindsey Walsh added a double.

Katie Deady got the big hit in Game 1 when she connected for a two-run double in the fourth. Ellyn Strother added an RBI double in the fifth to close the scoring.
