A 79-year-old woman was killed Wednesday evening after being hit by a car while crossing Roswell Road in east Cobb, police said.

Preliminary investigations show that Maria D. Roxo of Marietta was struck by a white Nissan 300 ZX, driven eastbound on Roswell Road by Rachel L. Odom, 25, of Marietta. Cobb Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said Odom was in the right turn lane at Old Canton Road, when Roxo walked into the road for an unknown reason. Odom’s car then struck Roxo.

Roxo was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Pierce said.

He did not know the extent of the injuries but said she was dead before reaching the hospital.

No charges are expected to be filed, but Pierce said the driver underwent a mandated blood test and results should be back in a few weeks.

“If there are any under the influence indications, then charges could be levied,” he said.
