COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a Columbus police officer was recovering at a hospital after they say he was attacked by a man wielding a sledgehammer.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that Officer Matthew Kennedy’s condition wasn’t immediately available after the Tuesday afternoon incident.

Police say the officers were sent to an address where they encountered a man who threw clothing items toward the officers and yelled at them to come and get him.

Police say that when the officers tried to talk to the man, he reached into a truck and charged at them with one hand behind his back. They say the man pulled the sledgehammer over his head, and officers used a stun gun to stop him.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the injured officer was struck by the sledgehammer.
