KENNESAW — Imagine a fireman’s pole, a slide, secret doors and a hidden room.

It’s not a fun house at some fast-food restaurant or the latest kid’s fantasy at Disney World. No, its Kennesaw resident Beth Little’s new home that she designed with her father, Reed Konigsmark of Marietta, to be more kid-friendly for her two children, 9-year-old Adams and 6-year-old Adeline.

“It may sound a bit silly, but it comes from watching Scooby Doo as a kid,” Little said. “I remember seeing all the stuff they would come up with in the cartoons and listened to what my kids wanted in our home.”

The house, located in the Marietta Country Club subdivision off Stilesboro Road, was completed in January.

Little and her father began drawing up the plans and construction of the unique living space about 18 months ago.

“She wanted to make the house child adventuresome, so to speak, so we put some fun things in it,” Konigsmark said.

He’s a longtime contractor who had never built a home like his daughter’s before.

Adams’ bedroom door looks like a bookshelf, and there is a fireman’s pole from the second to first floor, a secret room in the foyer of the house that’s just big enough for young children and a slide from one bedroom into the children’s playroom.

“I’ve been in the building business since 1978 and never done anything like this before,” Konigsmark said. “There were some really cute ideas.”

Little said her two children are over the moon about their new home. “They’re in heaven!” she said. “My daughter will run from my bedroom, which is right by the steps, all the way to where the pole is so she can slide down the pole, rather than walk down the steps.”

“The fireman’s pole is really fun,” Adeline said. “You can slide down it and get downstairs quicker.”

Little also said her son gets a kick out of visitors passing his bedroom door that looks like a bookshelf and not realizing it’s his room.

“If a burglar happens to come in, the robber would walk straight past that and would not expect it to be my room,” Adams said. “That’s what I like best!”

He said the fireman’s pole is “pretty dang cool, too.”
