Coach Brian Bohannon told the Council for Quality Growth on Wednesday that 60 percent of Kennesaw State’s student athletes have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and that’s the quality of athlete he’s seeking. He added that there’s room to make an impact on athletes who aren’t at that level, but have the potential to get there, too.
Athletic Director Vaughn Williams said Bohannon fits the Owls persona.
“His character, integrity and desire to be in the community make him an Owl,” Williams said.
Bohannon discovered his passion for KSU when he attended an Owls basketball game against Mercer University a few years back.
“There’s something special about this place,” he said. “There’s an unbelievable feeling of school spirit. I had to get my resume in the right hands that night, and the more I found out about KSU, the more excited I got.”
Kennesaw is already a great university, Bohannon said, but now everyone will see that through football.
“We want to, and are going to, win, but football can bring attention to Kennesaw developing great members of the community,” Bohannon said. “I’m looking for young men who treat their mothers right. And leaders who can run the locker room.”
Recruiting will begin April 15, and the first recruiting class will report in February 2014.
“If I can get these young men on campus to feel what I felt when I went to that basketball game, that’s it,” Bohannon said. He said recruiting would take care of itself with a packed stadium and a campus full of tailgaters.
April 1 kicks off the better intent program — an early effort to sell season tickets. The season tickets are for three years. Vaughn said the majority of the stadium would be dedicated to students, since they voted for the program and supported it, but that season tickets will be available for non-students.
“It takes a village to build a business,” Williams said. “It will be a total effort from our friends. I envision a black and gold Saturday in Cobb County.”
Wednesday was the first stop on a booked calendar for Bohannon and Williams. They plan to make the rounds in the Cobb business community in an effort to build enthusiasm for the football program, season tickets, suite availability and stadium growth, Bohannon said.
