SMYRNA — A drunk driver from Mississippi was hospitalized after leading officers on a high-speed chase, Smyrna Police said.

Officers pulled over Jessica Ocampo, 31, on suspicion of drunk driving around 9:30 p.m. June 1, according to Smyrna Police. While officers were arresting her, one of her passengers, Christopher Johnson, 30, jumped behind the wheel of the silver 2003 BMW and sped off, police said.

Johnson allegedly led police on a 90 mph chase down East-West Connector near Cooper Lake Road before stopping the car and running into the woods, where he was injured.

“(Officers) actually heard him fall into a ravine through a bunch of trees,” Smyrna Police officer Michael Smith said.

Smith said officers found Johnson unconscious in the woods and had him flown via helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Johnson is charged with DUI, driving with an expired tag, open container, driving with a suspended license, obstruction, speeding, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, improper stopping on the roadway and running a red light, all misdemeanors, and fleeing the scene, a felony, according to a warrant for his arrest. He had not been taken in custody as of Tuesday.

Ocampo was arrested on charges of DUI, open container, running a red light, driving with a suspended license, failure to maintain lane and an expired tag. She was released hours later from the Smyrna Jail, Smith said.

It is unclear whether Ocampo’s charges were misdemeanors or felonies.

Another passenger, Nicholas Johnson, 29, was cited for having an open container in the car, Smith said.

All three are originally from Meridian, Miss., but Smith was not sure if they were visiting family or friends or living in Smyrna at the time.

As of Tuesday, Smith was not sure if Christopher Johnson has been released from the hospital, and Atlanta Medical Center did not return calls for comment.
