Marietta being bypassed; bond would reverse that

DEAR EDITOR: With Election Day today, I write this letter in full support of Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin and the redevelopment plan for Whitlock Avenue and Franklin Road.

I have actively supported the bond campaign from its inception, and I firmly believe that its passage will not only make a great economic impact on the city of Marietta by encouraging business development but will add further stability to an already great school system as well as give much needed infrastructure and safety to the Franklin Road corridor.

As a young professional in Marietta, I am often asked by my “Inside the Perimeter” friends why on Earth I would choose to make Marietta my home when I could just as easily live in Buckhead, Midtown or Virginia-Highland.

I have many friends who live in Smyrna and Vinings who didn’t even look at Marietta when deciding on a place to live even though those cities are just down the road. In my opinion, this is a problem. Marietta has everything that these other places offer yet many young professionals are choosing to live elsewhere even though costs of living are much more affordable here.

I’ve had friends tell me that they were less than impressed with the drive into Marietta, specifically in and around the Franklin Road corridor, and that that caused them to look elsewhere to buy their first homes.

By passing the bond, we, as citizens of Marietta, are showing our commitment to forward progress. By stabilizing existing apartment complexes and encouraging businesses to relocate to Franklin Road, we have the opportunity to showcase Marietta for what it is — a city with exceptional services, government, schools and entertainment. It is a city that can and should compete with Smyrna, Vinings and Atlanta when businesses, young professionals and young families choose to relocate.

I am excited to see the housing growth near the Square, and I believe that the bond passage could eventually ignite similar growth along Franklin Road. I know how great it is to walk to the Square and enjoy a meal or a concert, and the redevelopment opportunities offered by passing the bond are simply too great to pass up.

Please join me in voting YES today for the future of Marietta!

Will Davis

Given the SPSU/KSU announcement, Kennesaw University obviously will redevelop Franklin Rd, unless we do it for them.

Why should we pay for this on our backs when the whole state educational system can pay for it for us?

LEAVE FRANKLIN RD REDEVELOMPENT TO KENNESAW UNIVERSITY. VOTE NEXT YEAR ON DELK OR ALLGOOD REDEVELOPMENT

That's the spirit... put the burden on the college students by hiking their tuition to pay for it. Ehhh...

I lived on Franklin Road as a kid in middle school (East Cobb Middle School). I can remember shootings and being afraid to go outside. My family later moved to Kennesaw to get away from that area. As a semi-recent SPSU grad, I am still familiar with how Franklin Road is now. It's in dire need of revitalization... Well before any educational system would phase itself to take care of 'it'.

It took around 10 years for Kennesaw State to acquire/buy-out the land around Big Shanty & Busbee Parkway and rezone the area to build what they have.

I'm ranting. Regardless, Franklin Road needs more attention than Delk by far. I'm with Will.
