Man arrested on assault charges

James Ronald Smart of Smyrna was arrested Aug. 23 on charges of aggravated assault with the intent to murder, battery and obstruction of a 911 call. He was released the next day on a $35,000 bond.

According to the warrant, Smart is accused of putting his hands around a woman’s neck and squeezing it until she could not breathe, while still telling her that he was going to kill her.

“The victim believed that (Smart) was going to kill her at the time of the incident,” the warrant states.

He is also accused of bruising the woman’s arm and thigh by grabbing her and breaking her phone on a hardwood floor at a home in the on Medlin Street in Smyrna while she was trying to call 911.
