Make it easy for brewery to open

In Thursday’s MDJ report on the efforts by the Marietta City Council to create zoning regulations governing breweries and distilleries, Councilman Johnny Sinclair requested public input on the decision.

Here’s a humble suggestion grounded in economic theory and America’s liberal heritage: Allow any legal business to operate in locations of their choosing.

Downtown Marietta should be open to all who can provide value to its citizens and visitors. I propose Councilman Sinclair replace the City Zoning Code and its myriad restrictions with the simple words “open for business.”

The city with thrive, the nannies will cry, and the politicians will be rendered impotent. A glorious thought, if only a dream.
