MDJ awarded at Georgia Press Association

JEKYLL ISLAND — The Marietta Daily Journal picked up a number of honors at the Georgia Press Association’s 2013 Better Newspaper Contest on Friday.

The contest was at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel during the group’s 127th annual convention.

MDJ chief photographer Laura Moon won 1st place in the photo essay category. Moon also received 1st place in the news photograph category. The MDJ was awarded 1st place in the special issues category for “Kickoff 2012.” In the editorial writing category, the MDJ won 2nd place; while also picking up a 2nd place award for Lifestyle coverage and for best sports photograph.

The MDJ was awarded 2nd place in the sports feature photograph category; 3rd place for general excellence; 3rd place for the sports section or pages category; 3rd place for best photo gallery on a newspaper website; and 3rd place in the photo illustration category.

“We’re proud of the hard work all of our staffers put into producing a quality newspaper every day, and it’s especially nice to see these winners recognized for their work by the Georgia Press Association,” said Leo Hohmann, news editor for the MDJ.
