Library computers back online after 13-day outage

MARIETTA — A glitch that left computers at the Cobb Public Library System without Internet access last week has been fixed, county officials said.

Library patrons experienced slow speeds or a complete loss of connection between Nov. 16 and Nov. 29. The county purchases internet access from Zayo, formerly American Fiber.

“The company had a team working to resolve the problem,” county spokesman Robert Quigley said.

Jill Tempest, associate director for branch services, said they could still check out books and perform other library services during the period.

“Most people were extremely understanding that the staff was trying to make their experience at the library extremely positive,” Tempest said. “Yes, some people were inconvenienced, and we were sorry about that, but we try to make it as minimal as possible on the customers because we are about giving the customers the best possible library experience we can.”

The 500 computers in the system’s 17 branches are extremely popular among the public, Tempest said.

“People use computers for all sorts of reasons, for writing papers, for writing books, for writing anything they want to,” Tempest said. “Students use them, adults use them, seniors use them, the military uses them, job searching for this difficult economy, lots and lots of people use them. Income tax time is coming up right? A lot of people use them for filing their income taxes.”

Julia Huprich, the system’s manager for digital services and public relations, said 2,425,622 people visited the library system in 2011 and checked out 3,429,513 items. Public computers were used 1,056,546 times in 2011, while library staff answered 493,438 questions that year.

The library system’s budget for fiscal year 2013 is $10.78 million, down from last year’s $10.95 million, Quigley said.

The budget decrease was due to declining property values.

“We cut back hours at branches, which resulted in less part-time staffing,” he said.

Yeah, if only the library were a business and charged us to access information. We wouldn't even have to call them libraries or anything like that, we could call them Waldenbooks or Barnes and Noble or something like that.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've gone to some government agency and things have not been 100% 24/7/365. I find HIGHLY infuriating when things don't my way at every waking moment. Not ONCE have ever seen something gone or done wrong at an actual business like WalMart or McDonald's, and the employees or those places are certainly more professional because they're paid by corporations and not the Monopoly money that government workers are given.

I wonder how many Businesses would stay "off-line" for 13 days? Answer: NONE!

We can thank Lee and Hankerson for their fine leadership on this issue.

They couldn't be bothered with small issues like Cobb Libraries, they were working on ways to raise Cobb Taxes.

Have to concur.

While in general the Cobb libraries are pretty good and the public facing employees have always been good,

- 13 days???????????????? never have heard of it before. And - there was no clear notice on the website - you would spend time searching for material - but inexplicably couldn't reserve it unless you searched around for a small note about computer service.

- The website has always been awlful. Next to Weather Channel, it is my least favorite website

- And, why do we need all these little libraries that aren't far from other libraries???? Oakdale, East Marietta, Gritters, etc.

Waste and lack of leadership.

Just left the library.
