ROSWELL — Lassiter took sole possession of first place in Region 5AAAAAA and clinched home field advantage for the first round of the state playoffs with a 17-10 victory over Roswell on Friday.

The Trojans (7-2, 6-1) are now alone atop the standings after Etowah — the co-leader coming into Friday’s action — lost to Walton 28-5 to fall into a tie for second with the Raiders and Milton.

Lassiter can now clinch the 5AAAAAA title and the top seed from the region in the Class AAAAAAA playoffs with a win over Etowah in its regular-season finale next Friday.

“It was a big win for us and now we have to come back and play our best against Etowah next week to win the region title,” Lassiter coach Jep Irwin said.

Will Anderson completed 22 of 39 passes for 182 yards, throwing for one touchdown and running for another, to lead the Trojans.

Lassiter got on the scoreboard first and took a 7-0 lead when Anderson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Blake Wilson and Luke Hardin kicked the extra point with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter to complete a 13-play, 68-yard drive.

Roswell came back to tie the score at 7-all when Mechane Slade scored on a 5-yard run and Shavi Bush made the extra-point kick with 3:08 left in the first quarter.

Anderson led Lassiter to its next score when he completed three straight passes — the last one for 19 yards — to move the ball to the Roswell 4 and then ran the ball into the end zone himself on a quarterback keeper with 8:30 remaining in the first half. Hardin converted the extra-point kick to give the Trojans a 14-7 advantage.

Lassiter added to its lead towards the end of the first half as Hardin kicked a 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to make the score 17-7 at halftime.

Roswell came back on the first offensive series of the fourth quarter as Bush booted a 22-yard field goal with 9:54 left in the game to cut Lassiter’s lead to 17-10.

The Hornets made one more final drive to the end zone as they went on a 14-play, 68-yard drive that took the ball all the way down to the Lassiter 12.

Roswell went for it on fourth down and 7 at the Trojan 12 with 2:12 left in the game, but Matt Cory threw an incomplete pass to end the Hornets’ drive and seal the win for Lassiter.

“Our defense played really well,” Irwin said. “Our defense was great in the second half and they did a good job of holding Roswell off on that final drive in the fourth quarter.”

I have been reading the comments and refused to respond until now because I truly believe this has gotten out of hand and is utterly OUTRAGEOUS!!!! The coaching staff at Lassiter has made it imminently clear that the players are NOT to tweet or post negative or inflammatory remarks. The boys have done an outstanding job refraining from doing so. It is a sad state of affairs, however, to see the parents behave in such a manner. What seems to be forgotten in all of this is that THESE ARE CHILDREN AND IT IS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!! While I understand some of your frustration with the "Home Grown" players not getting enough playing time, I am clear this is not little league and I am not coaching the team. Everyone DOES NOT get to play every game because they are on the team. You actually have to earn your spot and prove that you can play consistently with the same measure of accuracy. Parents have requested that you refrain from mentioning names as it places a lot of pressure on the boys, but you refuse to oblige. Character assassination, name calling and bullying appears to be the direction of these posts. A complete and total lack of dignity and class is missing and lost. While EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion, you should probably take heed to the way in which you provide it. I felt the need to get this off of my chest this morning, the Friday before a big game, and am hoping (thought not confident) that this nonsense ceases. You are more than welcome to respond to my post, but please know that I will not reply. I have said what I want to and am now DONE!!!!!

I am not the parent of a player so don't lower them to my level.

I am speaking up because they do have class and haven't.

I personally never said anything about "home grown" players.

You still don't get it, but you're ABSOLUTELY right - this is not little league, you aren't the coach, and everyone doesn't get to play simply because they are on the team.

You are also correct and summed up my point...

"You actually have to earn your spot and prove that you can play consistently with the same measure of accuracy."

Unfortunately, this never happened in pre-season.

The only character I have questioned is the coaches and booster club. You can say I lack class and dignity-I don't care. This isn't right, period.

If people wanted it dropped, then stop bringing up Anderson at all.

I have a really hard time getting excited about accomplishments and supporting a kid who was given a position over a better player - "home grown" or not.

dumb, dumber, and dumbest -

(aka 5-6A, serious or parody?, and Trojan2017)

WAKE UP!!!

all they want to do is work hard, have fun, and win...good for Will Anderson that he's second for yardage in 6A - let's have a parade...is this Lassiter or Will Anderson's team? Lassiter would be where they are if not better without him. Sorry, kid, but you should have known what you were getting yourself into. Anderson didn't come to Lassiter for Lassiter, he came for Anderson! Why don't you people get that???

And if that isn't bad enough, Lassiter already had a BETTER QB!!!

trojan2017 and serious or parody... it's definitely a parody! And you two are right up there with grandpa. Just because you're stupid doesn't mean I have to be a genius. If the discussion ended for you, then stay out of it. A few picks?! Seriously?! And if he's relying on Perdue, he can't be that good. Last time I checked there were 11 on the field. Pretty sure there's more than one who can catch a football.

Go check the booster club's books, get all the stats on both players, including sprint times,talk to the coach and ask him what he based his decision on besides "one of them emerged" or "they felt they could be more successful with Anderson". Both, by the way, are totally subjective - see if you can get some concrete answers. THEN you can come back and make comments. Until then SHUT UP!!!!!
Why do you?

@NoOneCares

You're a grandfather?! You sound more like a 2 year-old...You're keeping up with posts about high school football and making comments-that show you have no idea what you're talking about?

You have WAY too much time on your hands...go do something useful in your community!

I don't know if you've noticed, but all of Anderson's "lackluster" performances have him 2nd in yardage in 6A. Come on. Support the kids for performing well! They're 15-18 years old and they are playing a game. This is what's wrong with the sport - too much pressure put on them when all they want to do is work hard, have fun, and win. Y'all should be happy with this accomplishment by him and the fact that Lassiter has a chance yet again to win a competitive region - all with suspended players and parent turmoil. Great job players and great job coaches. You people don't know what you have.

@5-6A

You just don't get it!!! The turmoil is because Anderson isn't the best QB on the team! Period!

He may be able to out throw Aarons distance-wise, but that's it. Then you have to hope he gets it to the receiver and/or doesn't throw an interception.

I would love to see both Aarons and Anderson get an opportunity to be QB in the same game against the same team...that would end the discussion.

The discussion has been ended. The coaches saw both kids and made the decision. You must have coaching experience, won a region title as a coach, or some playoff games as a coach. You must be at every practice watching every throw. I agree that Anderson's only clear attribute that is head and shoulders above Aaron's is his arm strength. That being said, it has made for some pretty nice completions and some pretty big numbers. This discussion won't be decided until next year when Aarons can run the offense. I think he's going to be another good one for Lassiter and lead them further than people think. He has some qualities at QB that teams haven't seen at Lassiter in years. One area where you are off is making it sound like Will throws a lot of interceptions because he doesn't. Look at the other QBs around Cobb, and look at their interceptions. If you're going to discredit his yards and TDs because he throws the ball a lot, then also give him a break on throwing a few picks (which again... he doesn't do often). In fact, his attempts aren't outrageous either. Quincy is missed on the offense, and that's clear over these past two weeks.

@frustrated,

I must really be stupid because I can't for the life of me tell which it is.

Are you actually making fun of the people talking about all of the "turmoil" surrounding the Lassiter team that has now won four straight and is playing for a region championship?

Or are you REALLY just that dumb?

You really don't get it. This was a back door deal and the best QB isn't playing. Do you think there would be this much chatter if it was a legit situation. No.

We know what we have (or should I say stuck with) and he can go back to Alabama.
Hypothetical ????

Is it more important to have a star football player (repeat rule breaker) on a High School team who is suspended for ten days because he breaks school rules OR is it more important to respect the victim's (teammate) right to a safe environment where he doesn't have to worry about his personal items being taken?

Does Cobb County School District even care?

Why aren't the authorities - CCPD - involved?

Would a non-football player be subjected to legal ramifications?

Is football at Lassiter a "win at all cost" program?

Who decides what is right or wrong? The Head Coach, CCSD or the Principal?

Will the victim be bullied because the star football player missed two games?

Why is this issue not talked about by the administration or booster club? If a player didn't pay his fee he would be contacted several times.

Who has the answers?
I do

Absolutely win at all cost...at least he didn't have fishing gear in his car!

I'm confused. So is he off the team or did he just have to miss 2 games? Stealing is bad enough but it was from a teammate? Low class.

@Hypothetical???

And ALL the rest of you self righteous, hypocritical Lassiter parents that have a lot

to say behind closed doors(internet}!!

Try as you may, you can't hide your racist attitude with a mask of "concerned parent".

All you people do is talk about the kids that transferred to Lassiter and how your kid should get to play because he has been in the program longer and how much money you have given to the program and Blah Blah Blah!

NEW FLASH!! MOST OF YOUR KIDS CAN'T PLAY!! If they could they would be on the field instead of "the transfers". It sure is strange that none of you good folks were complaining last year when this SAME TRANSFER sat on the bench last year along with a couple of other transfers (including his brother) and a kid from Wheeler that where clearly good enough to play. This "star football player" didn't just wake up this summer with all this talent. As a lot of you know, this kid works hard on his game and he was just as good last year! Oh but wait a minute, I forgot, you people are not concerned with what is right or fair, only that your kid been here longer and therefore is "entitled!

HERE ANOTHER NEWS FLASH FOR YOU!! THE PLAYERS AT LASSITER (WHITE & BLACK) TAKE STUFF (STEAL) FROM EACH ALL THE TIME!

IN REGARD TO YOUR QUESTIONS - I don't know anybody on Lassiter's football team feels their environment is unsafe. But did again, just like you, I'm not in the locker room. Or are you?

As to the question of CCPD, and legal ramifications - I have no knowledge of what's going on there and I'm not sure how you would know either Hypothetical!

"Win at all cost program?" - this is nothing more than hype intended to inflame!

I'm not sure who decides what is right or wrong. But, one thing I know for sure, It sure as h... isn't you!

The only people being bullied on Lassiter's football team are the transfers by Lassiter parents like you!

I have a question for you Hypothetical - How do you know what the booster club talk about unless you are a part of the booster club and you are at the meeting??

This kid has made mistakes and I'm sure along his journey into manhood will make more. I have NO DOUBT that some of your entitled kids at Lassiter has made their share of mistakes (drugs etc.) too!

Here's a thought - Why don't you Lassiter Parents try to support the team instead of trying to divide it!

@NoOneCares

Nice. Let me get this straight. The reason your kid is a thief is because parents at Lassiter are racist? You're an idiot. No one cares about the color of a kid's skin.

STOP STEALING

@LHS Parents Care

BINGO! I knew one or more of you idiots would prove my point!

I don't have any kids at Lassiter but obviously you do! My kids have kids of their own.

Of all the things or issues I touched on, THE ONLY ONE you zoomed in on was me exposing your true colors!

"STOP STEALING" - I agree with you 100%!

as to the rest..Well, you know what they say in the country "a hit dog will holler"!

Good win guys! It's not every week that you will play your best game, but you fought hard and got a win on the road. I noticed a difference on defense in the second half when Corey John was in the game. Although we didn't have a big plays in the second half, we didn't have any big mistakes either. Let's take care of business Friday at home and enjoy our second region title in as many years.

Good win Trojans, now let's go finish the region on senior night next week. #trojanpride

You forgot a bunch of things. Let's see if the "self righteous" coach brings back suspended player. Word of the day is character. It applies to some players.

Still another lackluster performance by Anderson without suspended receiver.

Quincy Purdue is actually off the team due to stealing a phone the week after playing Milton. Lassiter is a bunch of dirty playhers and they will be out in the 1st round.

...but someone else covered it for you.

Yes, wrap it up on senior night and get that region title!
