KENNESAW — A rise in demand in its online business has put Home Depot ahead of schedule for hiring in Cobb County.

The addition of 700 new jobs to the company’s Kennesaw Contact Center, located at 3074 Chastain Meadows Parkway, is nearly complete.

“When we opened the center, we projected 700 jobs by 2015,” said Katherine Ellison, spokeswoman for Home Depot. “Now we expect all 700 to be filled by the end of the month.”

Ellison said Home Depot still has 140 jobs open at the center to fill before May 1.

The Kennesaw facility, which opened in October, supplies online support for its products offered through the company’s website at homedepot.com.

Employees at the center provide customer service — either by phone or online — for those looking to buy Home Depot products.

Most of the jobs still remaining are related to the online chat function of the call center, although the positions range from entry level to supervisors. The company is looking for applicants with good customer service skills and some home repair knowledge.

Ellison said Home Depot will assess the need for additional employees at the contact center, as needed.

“We haven’t set a projection yet,” she said. “But we are definitely seeing this is a part of our future growth. It has been exciting.”

Home Depot is also continuing its efforts to hire 400 seasonal associate positions for its nine stores in Cobb County.

The jobs are part of an initiative started in February to hire 80,000 seasonal employees nationwide during the busy spring season. That is 10,000 more than were hired last year. Seasonal hires sign on for 120 days.

Ellison said hiring for stores in Cobb County is ongoing as the weather warms.

Home Depot, which has its headquarters in Cobb County, has local stores in Acworth, Kennesaw, Marietta, Powder Springs, Austell and Lithia Springs. The company employees about 300,000 in 2,256 stores nationwide with 20,000 employees in Georgia, primarily in the metro Atlanta area.

Home Depot turns over its employees - corporate included - faster than it does its inventory...what a shame.
