“We serve traditional New York deli food fused with a New York style bakery,” said Anne Suarez, a Brooklyn native who opened the restaurant in 1996 with husband George from Hoboken, N.J.
The 790-square-foot hole-in-the-wall is a true find.
“We’re tiny — that tiny, crowded place where you can’t be a stranger and everybody has to know each other because there’s not a lot of space. It’s very familiar to anyone who grew up in the Northeast,” she said.
Anne Suarez came to Marietta to attend Life University before opening the restaurant.
“I immediately loved Marietta. When I was in school, I told George that I didn’t want to come back to New Jersey and for him to come here,” she said.
Because they both worked the health care industry and wanted to try something different, George suggested they open the restaurant. “We really were trying to be entrepreneurial,” said Anne Suarez, explaining they worked their way through college and graduate school in the hospitality industry.
Their entrepreneurial spirit paid off. Hoboken Bread & Bagel draws a large expatriate contingency from New York and the Northeast along with a huge Marietta following.
“We draw from such a wonderful cross-section from Marietta,” she said.
The attraction is the fresh and homemade menu items such as soups, sandwiches, and salads for lunch and breakfast pastries, bagels and bagel sandwiches for breakfast.
No preservatives are used in the food.
“Everything is all-natural. Everything is made in-house except for the potato chips. Everything else we make here. We bake all the breads. We make all the salads, all the pastries,” Anne said.
Hoboken’s homemade mozzarella is featured on three menu items.
“Our mozzarella is really quite popular,” she said. “Our specialty of the house that out sells everything 10 to 1 is our all-white meat chicken salad.”
Their homemade cookies taste like they came straight from your grandmother’s kitchen.
“Our big trend right now is our red velvet white chocolate chip sugar cookie. I just can’t make enough of them,” she said.
“We put a lot of love in the food, a lot of labor. It’s done in the old fashioned way with no shortcuts. It’s very good, high quality, comfort food that people miss and love,” Anne Suarez said.
