GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Gainesville police say they’ve made an arrest in a 2001 killing after getting the break they needed in the case, which had gone cold.

Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly says the suspect was taken into custody after an attack on a woman in Gainesville last week. They say it bore striking similarities to the death of 37-year-old Crystal Star Barnette in April 2001.

Police say a 39-year-old woman was attacked Wednesday night, but survived.

Kelly tells The Times of Gainesville that she and Barnette were walking when they were attacked, and both crimes happened less than a block apart.

The suspect, 40-year-old Daniel Lee Mason III of Atlanta, is charged with murder and aggravated assault in the 2001 case. It wasn’t known whether he has an attorney.
