Rodney “Rod” Ray Greene, age 75, of Smyrna, Ga., passed away peacefully on June 7, 2013. Rod was born on June 6, 1938, in Montgomery County, Tenn., to James A. and Icie W. Greene, both of whom preceded him in death, as did his only daughter, Beth Ann Sims, two brothers and one sister. Rod turned his love of family and community service into a lifelong career, first by serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, followed by 23 years as a Cobb County firefighter, from which he retired as fire lieutenant in 1994. Among his many passions, including music and singing, Rod enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, as well as curing meats and canning vegetables. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn Scales Greene; one sister, Bettey (Don) Lacer of Columbia, Ky.; one brother-in-law Joyce Roady of Granite City, Illi.; three grandchildren, Rodney Redd, Felicia Redd and Stacy Redd; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cobb Fire Death Benefits Fund, the Marietta (Ga.) Kitchen Fund or the Smyrna Church of the Nazarene. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in the Jonquil Chapel of Castellaw Funeral Home. Burial will be in Georgia Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
