MARIETTA — Cobb EMC has notified 38,000 people and companies that were members of the electric utility during the years 1957 to 1971 that capital credits from that period are being retired. The Marietta-based electric membership cooperative expects to retire $7 million in capital credits this year.
Any residential or commercial member from that time period, 1957 through 1971, will be due a refund. For those who are still member of Cobb EMC, refunds will be immediately credited to their accounts, appearing as deductions from the next electric bills.
For those who are no longer active members, the refunds will be distributed as checks once the former members are located. After an inactive member completes and returns a “Refund Request,” a check will be issued within 14 business days after the request is verified.
If a member is deceased, the spouse or a close relative, or the executor or administrator of the member’s estate may apply for the refund. A “Deceased Member Capital Credit” application must be completed.
If a member is otherwise the legal successor to the account of a former member, Cobb EMC can assign the capital credit account of the former member to another person, or entity, who is legally entitled to ownership of the account. An application for Re-designation of Capital Credits must be completed.
Application forms can be found at www.cobbemc.com. Additional documentation may be required.
As a nonprofit cooperative, Cobb EMC’s bylaws require that all funds in excess of operating costs be assigned to Cobb EMC members in proportion to each member’s purchases from the cooperative during the year. Such funds are known as “patronage capital credits.”
Verizon donates to YWCA
MARIETTA — In honor of Father’s Day, Verizon Wireless donated $2,500 to the YWCA of Northwest Georgia’s Y’s Guys Committee in Marietta. The money will be used to support healthy relationships among fathers and children and to teach fathers the importance of domestic-violence prevention.
The YWCA of NW Georgia Y’s Guys Committee gives men a voice against domestic violence and sexual assault.
“It is very important to recognize the important role dads play in developing strong, relationship skills and to helping peers live violence-free in healthy, happy homes. We are proud to honor these organizations and show appreciation for what they do in our communities,” said Jonathan LeCompte, president of Verizon Wireless’ Georgia/Alabama Region.
* WellStar Health System announced that its Kennestone and Cobb hospitals have again received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, an international nonprofit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to create communities of excellence that bring together quality, cost and patient satisfaction.
* Super-Duper Mini Chefs will take place at Town Center at Cobb mall in Kennesaw from 1 to 3 p.m. June 30. Aspiring young cooks and little foodies can explore the creativity of cuisine through demonstrations and activities. The event is presented by the Simon Kidgits Club and sponsored by Nickelodeon. Kids are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to be donated to a food bank.

Retiring credits that are between 41 and 55 years old. Say a person became a member at age 20 in 1971 that makes them now 61 years old. So the expected age of the youngest qualifying member is very close to 61. The average age is likely close to 78 assuming that they joined at age 30 in 1964, the middle of the period.
Plenty of time to move or pass on. Now they have to be located by Cobb or their trustee has to petition to receive the credit. Well as least they've lent their credits to a worthy cause - the defense of Dwight Brown. I bet there will be a check box on the refund application to donate it to Brown's defense.
