Disappointed by lack of support for Square theaters

Letter writer Bob Roth, is right on with his letter (“County should subsidize Lyric Theatre, too” May 26 MDJ) lauding Tim Lee for one of the only good things he has done lately. Roth is more than right about the Lyric and Next Stage Theatre and their value to the Arts scene in Marietta and Cobb County.

However, I was disappointed to see no mention of the exciting things being done by Young Actors Playhouse at the Theatre in the Square. Your columnist, Pete Borden, had a very informative column recently about Next Stage and Young Actors Playhouse and how they are helping to keep the performing arts alive and well in downtown Marietta.

Based on that column, I attended the opening of “To Kill a Mockingbird” at Theatre in the Square, on April 19. I was surprised that Borden, in his column, had omitted the fact that the he was portraying the evil Bob Ewell in that show. When I saw that he was in it, I looked forward to some positive input from the MDJ about the show and Young Actors Playhouse.

It was a good solid production and a credit to Harper Lee’s timeless novel. It deserved some press, not only for that, but for the fact that it was the inaugural adult production of Young Actors Playhouse at Theatre in the Square. If either was mentioned in the MDJ after the show opened, I must be blind. I looked carefully for any article, review, pan etc. and found nothing.

With the re-opening of the Theatre in the Square facility, I would think that the MDJ, along with merchants on the Square would be anxious to promote the venue, including Next Stage Theatre Company, performing in the Alley Stage space.

The Lyric leaving the Square need not be the end of theater-generated trade on the Square, and, quite frankly, when given the amount of “crying” done when it was announced, it is most disappointing to see the lack of support given the theaters which remain on the Square.

Come on people! Let’s support these theater efforts, to the mutual benefit of all concerned.

I very much want to see the Young Actor's Playhouse succeed. Glad to see another troupe in the building.

But it is just a building. Theatre in the Square is gone. Theatre in the Square was an organization. I don't like to hear such phrases as "re-opening of Theatre in the Square", and the new group being referred to as Theatre in the Square. People need to understand that this is a different group entirely. I wish that Mr. Goldstein would just take down those signs, and put up new signage for the new group.
