In an effort to expand the public’s access to libraries, the Cobb County Public Library System will add one evening hour to the Monday-Wednesday schedule at all 16 library locations in early January. The library system is also restoring Saturday hours at three of the four small library branches.

The new schedule is effective Monday, Jan. 6. The CCPLS also plans to restore Sunday hours at the main Switzer Library on Roswell Street in the fall.

Under the new schedule starting in January, three of the library system’s smallest branches — Acworth, Lewis A. Ray, and Sibley — will be open Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m. The three branches will now be closed Thursdays under the change.

Sweetwater Valley Library’s Thursday hours will be changed to 1 to 6 p.m., opening two hours later for the day. Sweetwater, a small branch in the Threadmill Complex in Austell, will continue to be closed on Saturdays.

Effective shortly after the start of the 2013-14 school year in the fall, the Switzer Library in Marietta will be open on Sunday afternoons for most of the regular 2013-14 school year calendar. The new Sunday hours will begin after Labor Day.

The new schedule in effect in January is a change from the hours of operation put in place since April 2011, as the CCPLS’ budget was cut to close a county-wide budget shortfall. “We are happy about the new hours,” says library director Helen Poyer. “We’ve heard people’s requests for additional evening and weekend hours, and it’s nice to be able to meet the demand for library services.”
