MARIETTA — A Cobb County man has been appointed by the governor to serve on the State Board of Education.

Scott Johnson, 55, was named Thursday to the 11th Congressional District state board. It was one of 17 appointments Gov. Nathan Deal made to various Georgia boards.

“My administration is committed to working every day, in every way to improve educational outcomes for Georgia’s children and to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Deal when asked why he selected Johnson. “The Board of Education plays a critical role in this process. I put Scott on the board to bring a businessman’s perspective to this important work. Given my emphasis on educational excellence, my appointment of Scott shows the depth of my respect for him. I know he’ll serve the people of Georgia well.”

Johnson said he was very appreciative of the governor’s appointment.

“It’s an honor and privilege to serve and I’m humbled by the governor’s confidence that he wants me to serve on the Board of Education,” Johnson said.

“Georgia has its challenges and also its successes, and I look forward to using my experience in business to help improve Georgia’s K-12 education by working with the board that’s currently there, the state school superintendent and the governor.”

Johnson will be sworn in Tuesday at the governor’s office.

The appointment marked the third time he had been chosen by a Georgia governor to serve on a state board.

Johnson was previously appointed, and continues to serve, on the board of the Georgia Department of Human Services and the Stone Mountain Memorial Association.

Johnson is the senior vice president of Financial Supermarkets Inc. of Cornelia, and he also serves as the chairman of the board of Republican Leadership for Georgia.

He is also the former chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party and a member of the Cobb County Transportation SPLOST Oversight Committee.

Johnson attended Shelby State College in Memphis, Tenn. He and his wife Janet live in west Cobb and have three children and four grandchildren, two of whom attend schools in the Cobb County School District.
