The situation apparently began after the Journal reported on July 3 that Hanson had been endorsed by the Cobb County Association of Educators, a teacher advocacy group.
A few days later, Banks distributed his e-newsletter, David’s Grapevine, in which he wrote: “This week one of my opponents made it known through the Marietta Daily Journal that the Cobb County Associations (sic) of Educators had given their endorsement based on my opponents ‘activity’ in education. To determine the validity of this claim, I personally contacted the schools where their children had either attended or were presently attending and in no instance could I validate or substantiate any participation in school activities or organizations by either of my opponents.”
Hanson said she was “very concerned and most disturbed” by the newsletter.
“For him to go to my children’s schools for information for political gain is highly unethical and way beyond the realm of what a board member should be doing,” she said. “The parents in Cobb County Schools deserve better than to feel like their information, privacy is being encroached upon, regardless if it’s a board member or just someone off the street.”
Hanson then called Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa, Board Chair Scott Sweeney and board attorney Clem Doyle. In an email to Doyle, she wrote that Banks “has used his position as an elected official to conduct an investigation on my children” and claiming his actions were in violation of board and SACS policy and federal privacy laws.
Banks said he did not receive any records about Hanson’s children.
“(Hanson) made the statement that she’d been very active in the schools, so whenever I saw two principals that her children would have gone to school to … I asked if they’d ever heard of her or if they knew anything about her, and their response was that they hadn’t ever heard anything about her,” he said. “It was just kind of a casual question.”
Banks said the “brief” conversation with the school principals took place about two months ago.
“Her children have nothing to do with it,” he said. “I would have never done that. She shouldn’t have listened to some of her advisers. What she’s trying to allude to was just garbage.”
Banks said he learned which schools Hanson’s children attended from newspaper reports.
“I didn’t even know she had children in school when she announced that she was going to run,” he said, adding that he didn’t see how she might see the newsletter statement as threatening.
Hinojosa told the Journal on Wednesday that he had spoken with Banks and was convinced no student privacy rules were broken. Hinojosa said he understood Hanson’s concerns but didn’t believe Banks intended any harm.
Neither Sweeney nor Doyle returned phone calls or emails about the incident.
For her part, Hanson said she hopes that Banks will learn that he can’t use his power as a school board member to do thinks such as contacting school officials.
“I have a 17-year-old daughter who is terrified that he will come to her school and start asking questions,” she said. “That’s not something you want to put on a 17-year-old daughter.”
She also wants to move on and focus on the issues in the northeast Cobb post.
Hanson, Banks and Stephanie Henry are vying to represent the area, which includes Lassiter and Pope high schools, on the school board in the July 31 GOP primary. No Democrats have entered the race, so the primary winner will likely be the one taking office in January.
Henry declined to comment on the newsletter.

Ms. Hanson’s statements were found to be false against Mr. Banks, not to mention that Hanson’s followers are doing a LOT of accusing of Mr. Banks… Sign stealing… Get real, I think the man has better things to do than something so preposterous. Mr. Banks has done exactly what post 5 people want. Isn’t that the kind of person you would like in office? I will fight for Banks all the way on July 31.
Does the general public have that kind of authority to walk into a school and ask about the involvement of other parents?
I'm sorry but I don't see that he used his status on the board at all. As you saw in the outcome, there was very little involvement in her schools. I'm sorry but I think Hanson has really lost her credibility in this one.
It was just plain stupid of him to bring kids into his political campaign. However, I am not sure any harm to the children was really intended.
Per the Superintendent, I am more than a little concerned that he is willing to look the other direction, when it comes to the safety of privacy of our children.
In the end, I think I will chalk it up to Mr. Banks' lack of understanding of the role of a school board member. I am glad that it appears that both of the parents he involved appear willing to move on.
This is not a Democrat/Republican issue.
It is not ab0ut the calendar.
It is not about "grammar Nazis" pointing out everyone's typos.
It is not about Banks' age, although that would certainly be a factor if I were considering whether or not to vote for him.
It is not even about whether Mrs. Hanson overracted or not.
The simple question to ask yourself is, "Do you think that you could walk into any school in Cobb County and obtain the information Banks says he obtained? If you believe that, then you must also believe that we have serious security problems in our schools. Banks used his position to obtain informatin for political purposes That is unethical.
Mrs. Hanson received the endorsement of an organization, If Banks had a question about their motivatin for endorsing her, he should have gone to them for the answer. That is what any reasonable person would have done.
Finally, it was stated that several eyewitnesses had reported seeing Mr. Banks removing his opponents' signs. Instead of dismissing it, should there not be at least some investigation into the allegations.
We need to dispense with the emotional name calling and disparaging remarks about both parties and determine if, indeed, there was unethical behavior.
BOTTOM LINE: i'm not running so you cannot look me up - She is, she stated she volunteered and Banks was verifying - You can get all this information from a WEB site - all the volunteers are listed. We make this public knowledge.
But the questions should NOT be answered by using one's political position but in a manner that is honest and that in which the public could use as well.
He used his position to gain information about a politcal opponent.
Did you forget that David Banks endorsed the teaching of Creationism in Cobb Schools?
Don't know much about Ms. Hanson -- but if these are her supporters she's no doubt a RINO (Republican in name only)!
However, Hanson's reaction to this is WAY over the top. Seriously? You go running to the newspaper on this issue? If she does this for such a trivial issue what is she going to do when faced with a more difficult challenge were she to get elected? Get real. Post 5 voters we don't need to elect another embarassment to the school board. I'm voting for Stephanie Henry. I knew her personally through my church. She's a class act and fine woman and would not embarass herself or Post 5 in the way Banks and Hanson have demonstrated.
But Henry endorsed Hanson last night.
My pick is Banks!
I think that history (the past 3.5 years) has shown us that Mr Banks is not a corroborative board member; If he doesn't get his way he will pout and refuse to consider any other options.
Also, early on, I asked him if he would have a "town hall" type meeting with the parents. This was a couple years ago when the first major budget cuts were coming. His answer: "NO, I would NEVER meet with the parents. I have no reason to." That told me right there that he was in the wrong position. Doesn't want to talk to his constituents? Really?
And I have emailed him questions/suggestions on occasion, some of which he did not agree with. His responses were rude, to put it bluntly. And that's if he actually responded. Through talking with other parents I know that I am not alone in that regard.
So I am looking for a representative that is there to do the job, not act like a VIP at school events. Someone who is able to work with the other board members to do what's right for our students, not be a malcontent.
Thanks Lisa, you have my vote!
So, let's see: Mr. Banks' plan calls for another 1% sales tax, and more legislation. Seriously? He's a real nice guy, but I think it's time for him to retire.
After reading Ms. Henry's bio, I'm a little unsure of her platform. She strongly agrees or disagrees, but didn't suggest a plan. We need representation and fresh ideas. Not another head nodder.
Ms.Hanson seemed pretty level-headed until now, and her bio does seem to be a bit over-inflated. A leader would have moved on, not run to the superintendent. Not sure that I like the CCAE's endorsement either.
Now I have to re-think things.
NO big deal with way !
Get real...He checked on the Hansen lady not her children and discovered she was "lying" about her involvement at the schools...good job by Mr. Banks at catching her...she definitely did not like it either.
As for this banter between Banks and Hanson, this is the same ol' thing for him. He thinks that everyone who receives his newsletter is a proponent of his. What a nut job! He actually takes CREDIT for SPLOST projects getting completed and "working with other Board Members to create a strategic plan." As he says, "Actions speak louder than words" so start by WAKING UP, Mr. Banks, and then take ownership of your actions.
As for the election, how can anyone think that Banks is "good" for our district? He is like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I'd rather have a mom that is willing to roll her sleeves up and learn by questioning the status quo over a 73 yo man who rants or sleeps.
For those that take exception to any candidate either validating or substantiating the claim of an opponent, Get a Life. When Ms. Hanson made the claim of being active in the schools her child attended. It would have been a very simple matter for Lisa Hanson to have listed those activities, whether PTSA’s, School Foundations, Booster Clubs or whatever. She did not, and Mr. Banks and Ms. Henry as candidates, as well as any Post 5 constituent, would have been justified in attempting to verify her claim. In fact any claim made by any candidate meant to enhance or embellish that candidates credentials for office is and should be subject to scrutiny.
What does Mr. Banks' age have to do with this subject. Whether he was 33 or 73, it is a little inappropriate to bring kids into a campaign.
Having said that, I am still voting for Mr. Banks and hope everyone else joins me.
This smells, not only fiashy, but somewhat like an entire seafood store gone bad.
First, if Banks had a question about why the group suppoprtsher, why did he no simply contact the group and ask them?
Second, where does he feel he a=has the autority to pry into the personal life if anyone? How many more people are being "investigated" by ths geriatric buffoon?
Third, what does Scott Sweeny, the do nothing chairman of the board, intend doing about this serious breach of decency and possibly the law>
Fourth, what does Hinojosa intend doing about the school system employes who aided and abetted in this indecent and repulsive behavior?
Finally, do you think Mr. Banks would be up to answering why he has been observed, on more than one instance, in the act of removing political signs placed by his opponents and discarding them>?
My kids have had some of the worst teachers since we moved from New Jersey 4 years ago. We need to look at a better way of educating our kids. Georgia is in horrible shape and we need to do something different. Go Mr. Banks!
He caught her lying saying she volunteered when she didn't - Glad he was so bold to do so.
Oh and yes the anti-balanced calendar is out to just smear and grasp at anything they can.
Haven't switched my vote yet - it will be for David
