A Cobb judge has sentenced an Austell man convicted of whipping a child's genitals to serve five years in prison.

The Atlanta newspaper reports 31-year-old Andrew Charles Pride was sentenced Thursday. Pride was convicted of first degree child cruelty a day earlier.

Prosecutors say Pride whipped a 22-month-old boy multiple times in the groin on Aug. 17, 2012 because he wasn't cooperating with potty training efforts at a home in Austell. Prosecutors say the beating cause bleeding and welts.

Pride was also ordered to serve 15 years on probation upon his release and to have no unsupervised contact with minors.

Authorities didn't disclose the relationship between Pride and the child.

Brute!

This scum bag is a brute and no doubt would never think of "whipping" someone his own size. He abused this child and it is very likely it is not the first time. People that actually harm children should simply be thrown in jail with no parole, ever, period. If the laws need to be changed, then someone should look into that.

how does spanking someone and whipping a toddler's genitals until they bleed even compare. how can a human being even make that comparison?

it is disgusting and deplorable what this coward did, but it is equally disgusting to see people half-heartedly defending his actions by saying things used to be worse. humanity is gone.

People that do things like this are the scum of the earth. Five years is not enough time for him, in fact, its ridiculous. That child may never fully recover from the mental and physical damage done to him. And is anyone stupid enough to think that this is the only time the child was abused?? This is not a "spanking", this is abuse, pure and simple.

He was not the child's parent for one thing. And he caused injury consistent to hospitalization to a child 22 months, (just a baby toddler)!!! He may have permanent and emotional scars in adulthood. I hope and pray this monster gets to think about abusing innocent little children who can't defend themselves while he is put away. Away is where he needs to be. I wouldn't want him anywhere near me or my family. He have to start drawing a line in this society for the child sake.

At first I didn't understand why someone would be sentenced to five years for spanking a child. But if it causes injuries to that child, I guess there is a problem. Kids today would have never survived growing up in the 1950's and 1960's!
tired of it

there is a big difference in beating and spankings, yes spankings hurt but you hit the butt. when you hit private parts on purpose that is a different story you could actually cause damage to the body part.
