MARIETTA — Erin Fox, a paralegal for longtime Marietta attorney Marian Weeks, said her children could have been killed by an explosive device allegedly placed in the mailbox of the law firm by an acquaintance of another Marietta attorney.

Police have arrested Marietta attorney Angel Cordle on felony criminal damage charges. According to the arrest warrant, on Dec. 21 at about 8 p.m., Cordle drove to 367 Atlanta St. with David Eugene Haynes of Marietta riding in the passenger seat. Haynes, the warrant goes on to say, got out of the car and placed an explosive device in the mailbox and returned to the car. The device then exploded, destroying the mailbox, the warrant says.

“The victim (Fox) and her juvenile children were in close proximity to the mailbox and could have been struck by shrapnel from the destroyed mailbox,” the warrant reads.

Weeks was unavailable for comment.

Fox told the Journal she was driving her three children and their 14-year-old friend to see their 14-year-old friend to see the Lights of Life exhibit that evening at Life University. Fox said she passed the law office and noticed a yellow Hummer parked there.

“I recognized it as the yellow Hummer belonging to Angel Cordle,” Fox said. “She’s the only one who drives a yellow Hummer around here like that, and her office is located behind ours.”

Fox pulled over to see why Cordle was parked there when the mailbox exploded.

“We have a large mailbox,” Fox said. “It completely flattened the round part. … It’s of thick steel. The police said it was not a firecracker. They said it was not an M80. They don’t know what it is at this point.”

Fox said she began screaming, telling Cordle she was calling the police. Cordle and Haynes drove off, with Haynes laughing hysterically, Fox said.

“It landed within a foot of my son,” Fox said of a piece of shrapnel from the blast. “It blew up the mailbox and a part landed a foot away from my son, thank God who was still in the car. This would have killed somebody. Thank God it detonated when it did because if it had not detonated when it did, and I had not seen it, and they had just driven off, our mail carrier would have been dead the next day when he opened that mailbox.”

Cordle, who lives in Mableton, was arrested Friday. She was released on $5,000 bond.

Haynes was arrested on Dec. 21 on a charge of criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and released on $1,000 bond.

Fox said she can’t understand why the two would do such a thing.

“There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for her to have done this,” Fox said. “Everybody is in a state of disbelief. We don’t understand why this happened.”

I find this story very hard to fathom! I am a past and hopefully future client of Angel. My multiple interactions with Angel encourage me believe that there is something queerly reported or observed in this incident. I know Angel as a trustworthy and committed Attorney, (…not someone normally found).

In my opinion, Angel is a “gift” to our often offensive society and I pray for her exoneration from both the felony allegations and the pretentious public abuse of these claims.

The disher- her office is directly across the street so she has to drive by to get to her office every time during the day I know that area- in addition, why wasn't the ATF contacted immediately seems like u could have ascertained by a swab of ms fox, the client, or Angel's hands or both vehicles if they were responsible for the explosive devise, fyi or exonerate them u do that immediately fyi

I don't know why they would be in the same car- but I don't understand why angel is being charged with a larger crime than the person that placed it supposedly in the mailbox.

Also, just because someone says they saw it doesn't mean it happened fyi- doesn't mean it's the truth-like I would like to get the psychiatric background of ms fox which I am sure Angel's attorney will do and let's see ms fox take a lie detector test I bet deception comes up-

Would u want to go down on someone's eye witness testimony? Hell, that leaves us all screwed at some point in life if u don't have to prove it-

I could understand if someone could show me motive but let's be honest a divorce attorney might have the greatest chance to have their mailbox blown up by former clients or opposing spouses- Angel would be set up to drive by and be in the vicinity, fyi. Also, ms fox's statement in the papers about how lucky she was there when it happened because it could of blown up the mail man wreaks of deception and her appealing for federal charges setting someone up but also being a possible hero for the postman-

Also, I would have to see more than an emotional highly suspect paralegal who just happens to be at her employers at 8pm now on a Friday night and now all of a sudden is a victim and a hero - she escapes possible tragedy and now is the hero for catching another rival lawyer in the midst of a federal crime? Come on, how much mileage and attention has ms fox gotten now- I wouldn't be suprised if u dug up ms fox's background and don't find a recent break up or something this fits the profile of someone seeking attention, fyi

Only thing I am saying if u were someone that was emotionally unstable this fits the profile of someone that enjoys the attention and mileage this is getting now she is a victim and a hero- be cautious believing an "eye witness" because if ur losing ur career and life possibly based off ones words only that is too powerful in my book and is a throw back to 1920's-1960's where people's lives were ruined because of purely eye witness testimony- the ATF if called could have sealed or exonerated the case if called immediately by Marietta police fyi which should have been normal protocol they could have tested the hands or vehicle and known if it came from angels vehicle this is 2013 not 1913.

MJD/Mr. Gillooly,

Why no update on such a sensational case? I would think this might be the Pulitzer Proze story if you actually get to the bottom of it.

I'm curious why a female lawyer would be in a car with their male client who is going through a divorce at 8pm -- when there are no hearings, depositions, etc. going on at night. There may be a plausible explanation, but nobody has released it. Also, the paralegal actually saw the passenger get out and place something in the mailbox. So...they weren't just driving by or in the area. Something smells here. Neither the paralegal nor the law firm have any apparent incentive to make this up. Plus, they aren't even opposing counsel in David Haynes' divorce.

I've had dealings with her. She represented my friend's ex-husband. Not real smart.....for sure. We wondered how in the world she made it through law school.

This sounds like a set up- for example, I noticed ms weeks who owns the law firm didnt comment and I find it very suspicious that mrs fox just happened to be in the area at the time of the explosion which would make her a potential suspect as well considering her employers mailbox was blown up as well-

In addition, anyone selling a story of this magnitude to the papers and anyone that will listen when she lets be honest didnt see angel or this other person put a device in a mailbox- angel has a reason to be in that area FYI she works across the street it's much more suspect that an employee just happened to be driving by at 8 pm on a Friday night on her way to see the lights at life university last I checked the two are not close by making it more suspect for ms fox just being in that area- FYI

What motive would ms cordle have for placing an explosive device at her next door neighbors law firm? She seems to have a lot to lose to do something like that and the time at 8pm on Friday night in a yellow hummer sounds strange to say the least not a very good prime time to plant an explosive device in my opinion

Be interesting how this plays out but I would look at their phone records and examine that ms fox now all of sudden seems to enjoy the victim role here in the papers, FYI

Time will tell but if its just her word saying I saw a hummer with someone laughing that works across the street hell that doesn't seem strong at all

According to the online Cobb County Superior Court records, Angel Cordle is the attorney representing David E. Haynes in his divorce. The case is still open.

Large mailboxes such as Ms. Fox's, typically erected primarily to induce envy in the neighbors, are in my opinion clearly an attractive nuisance.

As such, Ms. Fox's erection of this attractive nuisance is in my opinion wholly responsible for the actions allegedly undertaken by Cordle and Haynes who were in my opinion unable to help themselves in the face of such an obvious and negligent attractive nuisance such as a large mailbox. Who in their right minds would put up a large amount of potential shrapnel as a mailbox? I think nobody with a concern for public safety would do such a thing!

Cordle and Haynes in my opinion are the clear victims in this case. Had Ms. Fox a normal sized mailbox built from a safe material that was not so attractive, this incident never would have occurred, if you ask me!

Several neighbors have reportedly filed affidavits about how dangerous this mailbox was. They supposedly felt as if they were in imminent danger every time the passed by it!

The facts of this case will come to light and Cordle and Haynes will be fully exonerated, but justice will not be served in my opinion unless Ms. Fox pays a penalty for the nuisance she created and the danger she put her own children in for actively bringing them into the vicinity of this nuisance.

Some folks get their law degrees while still in high school, it seems. Allegedly, right?

So if your mailbox is 'too large' and it annoys others then anyone has the right to blow it up and the bomber is the victim??? And having a large mailbox puts people in imminent danger just in case some idiot decides to put a bomb in it??? Hard to believe you are serious!

I really hope that the community will not make any judgment about Ms. Cordle until ALL the facts are available. Something just is not adding up here. I'm also a little concerned that virtually every "fact" in this article is based on the word of one person who has an obvious flare for the dramatic.

Looks like we have another Judge Cox, in Judge Taylor. Judge Taylor let the defendant in this case out with an OR bond, per Cobb Sheriff webpage. Lawyers hooking up lawyers. I guess if your a lawyer in Cobb you are above the law. Everyone is held to a higher standard except lawyers who are friends with Magistrate Judges.

What is it with Marietta attorneys at Christmastime. They seem to get into some kind of trouble every year.
Angel or Devil??

December 29, 2012
So Angel Cordle has been arrested for a felony criminal damage charge. Interesting how she always writes her name with a halo over the the 'A' as one might do in grade school. Putting innocent people in danger and destroying federal property would make her more of a devil methinks. What a terrible example for a lawyer to set. I guess she thinks she's above the law.

Looks like you were on the other side of a court battle with Angel and are now bitter at her. If you want to start talking about people being in "grade school", you might want to reread what you wrote "...would make her more of a devil methinks.". Ignorance.

Ms. Fox, do you think you time spent with lawyers has caused you to overreact as it appears in this article? Yes, it was a stupid and dangerous thing to do, but your performance was something out of Perry Mason.
Erin Fox
|
December 29, 2012
I am sorry you feel I have over reacted. Hopefully you are never put in a situation like this. I actually don't feel that I over reacted at all. Someone could have been seriously injured or killed. The two people who did this have been injured or killed. Thank God he was looking over all of us!
Wrong character

December 29, 2012
It's Angel Cordle who seems to have overeacted to something and who looks like someone from a Perry Mason story!
No Overreaction
|
December 30, 2012
What do you consider overreacting? Panic when your children almost get hit with shrapnel? If an unexpected explosion occurs with shrapnel flying towards your children, only a heartless parent would not "overreact".

The diagnosis of PTSD for the military would apply here - not only for mom but the children as well. I hope Ms. Angel is a successful lawyer with malpractice insurance.
my question
|
December 29, 2012
My question is why have these two criminals been released? They sound dangerous, possibly deranged, so they are free to maybe plan more mischief? They obviously had no concern for anyone who might be harmed by their unlawful act. I think it is disgusting.
Legal Eagle

December 29, 2012
Do you know for sure whether "these two criminals", as you call them, are guilty as charged? I sincerely doubt it. Being charged with an offense DOES NOT mean that a person has committed it. Most of the comments already posted here pertaining to this case are ill-informed, hurtful, and otherwise mean-spirited. Why not allow the courts to decide this case based on actual evidence, rather than reputation-smearing and innuendo? State Bar of Georgia has no grounds for disbarment until the underlying charge has been substantiated and proved. In short, Fellow Citizens of Georgia and The United States, jumping to conclusions about the alleged guilt and personalities of the involved parties serves no useful purpose.

Legal Eagle, it doesn't take a blind individual to see that the legal system is flawed. The courts can be presented with solid evidence of crimes and still rule in favor of the criminal. You have to be truly mental to feel that righteousness is involved in todays societal justice system. It's an economy of checks and balances.
