A local man faces charges after police say he stole copper pipes from a vacant house near Mableton Parkway in Austell.

Travis Byrd of Mableton reportedly entered the house and began cutting copper pipes from the home with the intention of stealing the pipes.

The arrest warrant states police heard the sound of someone cutting metal coming from inside the house before attempting to enter.

Byrd allegedly ran into the attic of the house after Cobb County Police entered the house and refused to leave the attic. The Cobb County SWAT Team was called to the scene to remove Byrd from the house, according to the arrest warrant. The SWAT Team reportedly used gas, removed portions of the ceiling and eventually used a Taser in order to secure Byrd in handcuffs.

Byrd was arrested June 7 and jailed on a $25,000 bond. He was charged with burglary in the first degree, criminal damage in the second degree and obstruction
