DEAR EDITOR:

The headline on a recent front page Associated Press article in MDJ stated “Some Democrats could hinder gun control measures.” With the choice of the word “hinder” the AP author establishes at the outset that opposition by some Democrats would be an unwarranted and ill-conceived attempt to block necessary legislation. The author reaffirms her opinion by stating these same Democrats could “frustrate” the President’s efforts to enact sweeping limits on weapons as if we should all believe that sweeping limits is the only course of action. It is clear where the author stands in the forthcoming debate. The article was accompanied by a picture of people marching in Washington in support of gun control.

Did I miss an AP article on the 40th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision citing that the Supreme Court decision has “hindered” the right to life of 55 million unborn or that some people were trying to “frustrate” those who seek to be a voice for the unborn? Did I miss the accompanying picture of the thousands more who marched on the anniversary of the decision? The fact is that, because these issues are highly emotional and passions run deep, we are entitled to unbiased reporting rather than selective reporting with insinuated opinion.

Unfortunately there are insufficient outlets for comprehensive national news. Many newspapers have to rely on sources such as the AP which has uninhibitedly abandoned a neutral approach to reporting and supplanted it with a political and cultural agenda. The message to all of us is reader beware.
