Ernieta Herod uses her passion for making crafts to spread God’s word. She sells her handmade items at ReStored Frugal Finds and Consignments, 787 Roswell St., a mission of Global Mission Outreach, a nonprofit organization. After paying the rent, the Global Mission Outreach donates 100 percent of net proceeds to the Bible League that distributes Bibles in 100 different languages around the world and provides a literacy-training program.

“Making items to consign to do the Lord’s work is awesome. It’s my ministry now,” Herod said.

Since retiring from the Justice Department several years ago, the west Cobb resident found her niche arranging flowers at her church, Temple Baptist on Macland Road in Powder Springs. Herod is also a seamstress with a sewing room that her husband, Don, an air traffic controller at Dobbins Air Force Base says “equals any CAP COMM control room at NASA.”

“People at church say that (creating) is my God-given talent,” said Herod, who turns 62 in November.

One of Herod’s favorite crafts is to make doggie-beds-on-the-go from old pieces of luggage that can be collapsed in order to transport. A friend who makes chairs from old luggage inspired Herod who has two longhaired dachshunds, Cherokee and Cheyenne.

“I thought I could make these dog beds out of suitcases, and we could carry them with us,” she said.

She accessorizes the doggie beds to make them personal.

“I make little pillows. Some I make elegant. Some I make funny,” she said. “Doing crafts is creative. It keeps my mind active. I love thinking of different things. I love coming up with new ideas.”

And Herod is always coming up with new ideas. Among the other items she makes are comforters, redneck wine glasses made with Mason jars on top of glass candlesticks, red solo cup wine glasses (inspired by Toby Keith’s song “Red Solo Cup”), and champagne glasses on Mason jars for those with “champagne tastes on a beer budget.”

“I just have so much fun coming up with ideas. I can’t stand just to sit at home,” Herod said.

Visit Frugal Finds & Consignments from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Herod also sells at Bell’s Handcrafts at 30 South Court Square in Newnan.
