SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego judge has sentenced two men to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their roles in a Mexican drug gang that dissolved victims’ bodies in acid.

Jose Olivera got five consecutive life terms Friday and David Valencia got two consecutive life terms for charges including murder and kidnapping.

A jury convicted both men of strangling two kidnap victims after holding them for nearly three weeks at a San Diego home in 2007, then dissolving their corpses in acid. Olivera was convicted of a murdering another man whose body was left in a trunk.

Prosecutors say the men belonged to a group that defected from the Tijuana, Mexico-based Arellano-Felix cartel. Authorities say the group was disbanded after an FBI operation in 2007.
