The estranged wife of former Sprayberry High School and Major League Baseball pitcher Kris Benson allegedly entered his home wearing a bulletproof vest and threatened to beat him with a metal baton.
The incident went down between 10 and 11 p.m. Sunday night at Benson’s house at 1167 Drewsbury Court in Smyrna.
Anna Benson, the 37-year-old model who starred in the short-lived reality TV show “Baseball Wives,” became upset after a court order forced her to vacate the couple’s marital home, according to police reports. Kris Benson, who filed for divorce last year, said Anna threatened to hit him with an “expandable metal baton.”
The police report said that when Kris Benson came out of the upstairs bathroom, he encountered Anna in the master bedroom holding the metal baton. He told police she was threatening him with the baton and striking her vest with it. She sat down at his desk and whacked his computer monitor with the baton, according to the report.
She then went to her purse and took out a handgun and walked toward Kris Benson and told him that she wanted $30,000, according to the account given to police by Kris Benson. He then told her that his wallet was outside, and he needed to go get it. She said she needed a cigarette lighter as well. He left the room and noticed his wife was not following him so he went to the basement, called 911, then left the house and waited in the woods for police to show up.
Police asked him what he thought Anna was going to do with the baton and he said “hit me with it.”
“She was screaming out of control,” he told police, and when she drew the gun he said, “It scared me. I wasn’t sure because of the way she was acting.”
The former pitcher did say, however, in his account of the night’s events that Anna Benson never pointed the gun directly at him.
“He said she was holding it against her chest, but not pointing it at him or her,” Cpl. C.P. Flowers of Smyrna Police wrote in his report. “He said at times she pointed it to the ground. He said she was out of control, and he was scared.”
Anna Benson also had an ammunition belt around her waist, according to the report. It was taken into evidence, along with the Taurus Judge revolver, the vest and a small knife that police say they found in the vest’s inside pocket.
After police read Anna Benson her Miranda rights, telling her she had the right to remain silent and the right to have an attorney, she reportedly shared more information with them.
“She told me she did not think that she did anything wrong and didn’t understand why we were making such a big deal out of this,” Flowers wrote. “She told me that she came over to the house to speak with (Kris) about why he hadn’t picked up the kids and to discuss money. She said she entered the house through the garage door which was unlocked and confronted (Kris) in the master bedroom. She said she had her baton out and that she was angry and thought about hitting him. She admitted she told him that she was going to hit him. She said she thumped her bullet-proof vest a couple of times with it and then swung the baton around and finally hit a computer monitor on the desk.
“She told me that her gun was in her purse and that she demanded the money she was owed from him. At first she said she got the gun out of her purse and that it was in her hand when she confronted him, but she changed her statement and said it wasn’t in her hand. She said that when she confronted him she was angry and called him a ‘p----’ several times and that he went to get her a lighter. The next thing she knew the police were talking to her.”
Flowers said he asked Anna Benson why she was wearing the bullet-proof vest and she said that it was “a new model she was testing for a company. She said she had to wear it for an extended time to get it to ‘mold to her body.’”
Anna Benson then told police that she knew there were illegal drugs in the house and offered consent to search the place.
A roster of items police seized in the search included a bag of syringes, a computer hard drive and eight “unknown pills.”
Anna Benson was arrested and charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault with a weapon, and one count each of criminal trespass and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Kris Benson showed police a copy of a court order filed in Superior Court of Forsyth County that gave him “exclusive possession” of the home and ordered her to “vacate by 9 a.m. Monday,” June 3.
Benson last played in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010 and has a career win-loss record of 70-75 with an ERA of 4.42. He also played with the New York Mets in 2004 to 2005.
The couple married in 1999, the same year Kris made his big-league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and had three children together, according to Bleacherreport.com. Anna filed for a divorce in 2006, but later withdrew the petition.
A former model, Anna Benson met the former Sprayberry hurler while she was working as a dancer at an Atlanta strip club, according to a report in Tuesday’s New York Daily News. Her modeling career has included a topless spread in Penthouse magazine and racy cover shots for FHM magazine.
