Virginia students defied 'Massive Resistance' 07/03/2008
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Seventeen black students who endured isolation and their classmates' scorn to integrate Norfolk's public schools will be honored Sunday for ending Virginia's stubborn defiance of court-ordered desegregation. The Norfolk 17 will be recognized during a service at historic First Baptist Church, a downtown sanctuary that held classes in its basement 49 years ago when six white public schools closed rather than educate the 17. Twelve of the surviving 14 students will attend on Sunday, and representatives for three of the dead will be recognized. Andrew Heidelberg, 64, has written about his experience and recognizes the pioneering role he and the other 16 students played half a century ago in ending Virginia's "Massive Resistance'' to school desegregation.

Va. fort's future in focus as Army plans pullout 07/03/2008
HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Fort Monroe — a Union oasis where fugitive slaves flocked during the Civil War — returns to Virginia's control when the Army pulls out in 2011, and historians are trying to protect the future of the "Freedom Fortress.'' Many slave descendants trace the arrival of slavery in the U.S. in 1619 to Old Point Comfort, the hatchet-shaped peninsula where Fort Monroe sits, and where slavery would be ushered into its final stages nearly 2½ centuries later. "When you look at how immigrants went to Ellis Island, our people couldn't do this,'' said Gerri L. Hollins, who counts a fugitive slave among her ancestors. "This is our Ellis Island.'' Supporters want to see the fort become a national park. A state-appointed authority presented a reuse plan to Gov. Timothy M. Kaine on Monday that proposes preservation and strict limits on new development. The panel is determining how best to tell the fort's history, and descendants of slaves who found their freedom there are hopeful their story will be featured.

McCain to tour Colombian drug control efforts 07/02/2008
CARTAGENA, Colombia (AP) — Republican John McCain planned to tour a Colombian port by boat Wednesday to get a firsthand look at the country's drug interdiction programs, a day after he praised President Alvaro Uribe for Colombia's anti-drug efforts but pressed him to improve the government's record on human rights. The Republican presidential hopeful was on a three-day visit to Colombia and Mexico, where the eradication of illegal drugs topped the agenda. "Drugs is a big, big problem in America. The continued flow of drugs from Colombia through Mexico into the United States is still one of our major challenges for all Americans,'' McCain told ABC's "Good Morning America'' Wednesday in an interview from Cartagena. McCain was also promoting free trade deals like NAFTA he said would benefit the U.S. economy over time, even though such agreements have been deeply unpopular in several general election swing states like Ohio and Michigan.
