Work is continuing on the City of Marietta’s first roundabout, being built at the intersection of Fairground Street and Allgood Road, west of Cobb Parkway from the Walker School. City engineer Jim Wilgus said Wednesday afternoon that although officials had hoped to have the project open before school resumed, problems including weather and some of the soil not being compact enough pushed that back. The roundabout is now slated to be open by Tuesday, Wilgus said. The roundabout is part of a $5 million SPLOST-funded project that includes medians, new sidewalks with brick accents, and street lighting on Fairground Street between Allgood Road and Rigby Street. The cost of construction is $450,000, plus another $193,911 in right-of-way expenses.

At a new roundabout in Roswell, a majority of drivers think it is a turn-based intersection or that only one vehicle can be in the circle at a time. This week a RPD vehicle pulled out in front of me while I was in the circle. It's clear most drivers have no clue how to use a roundabout, they won't educate themselves, and they have no concept what a YIELD sign means.
Roundabouts only work when people know how to drive in them.
