Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona is a dedicated if misunderstood public servant. The controversial 80-year-old lawman who's running for a sixth term just announced his "posse" (as in "head 'em off at the pass!") investigated President Barack Obama's birth certificate determined...drum roll please...it's a forgery.

How exactly Arpaio's jurisdiction extends as far as Hawaii the sheriff doesn't say. But It must have been quite a sight what with the sheriff's posse elbowing their way past Donald Trump's own birther posse in the Honolulu city records department.

Of course the liberal mainstream media mostly disregarded Arpaio's breathless announcement proving to the tin foil hat crowd that, once again, when it comes to important far right wing jihads, the MSM is "protecting" the president.

Arpaio made other, more relevant news last week after his civil class action trial began in Phoenix where the the American Civil Liberties Union and Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund are charging that his officers have based traffic stops on the race of Latinos even when there was no probable cause to stop them. Profiling in other words. The case began after Arpaio's deputies detained a Mexican tourist with a valid passport for nine hours.

This suit is is in addition to the one the Justice Department filed in May charging Arpaio with civil rights violations, which could explain Sheriff Joe's sudden interest in Obama's place of birth.

The problems immigration present require finesse, sensitivity and reason. But when your only tool is a hammer, as in Arpaio's case, everything looks like a nail. Thus, advocacy groups agree Arpaio has ignored Constitutional guarantees in favor of expediency. His notorious tent city jail in Phoenix, which Arpaio proudly calls his "concentration camp," comes to mind.

There's also the unmistakable stench of racism swirling around the sheriff's ham handed tactics. After receiving a letter from a citizen inviting Arpaio to "come over...and round up" men with "dark skin" who have "the look of the Mexican illegals that are here illegally," the area in question was targeted for immigration dragnets. The sheriff himself has said, "go after illegals, not the crime first."

Whether or not either of the law suits endangers Arpaio's re-election remains to be seen, but there is little doubt among advocates that Joe Arpaio is gunning for Latinos and not any blond haired, blue eyed Danes who may be in Maricopa County illegally.

"He's created a whole kind of institutional structure around racial profiling," says Juanita Molina of the Border Action Network director. "It's like the old spaghetti westerns where you've got people in the black hats and the white hats, and there's nothing in between."

@ Mr. Swensson - I had the prima facie with a nice chianti the other night at Frankie's on Canton Highway. Delicious!

Just kidding ;-)

I'm not worried about Obama's birth certificate. I am very worried about uniformed and ignorant voters letting Karl Rove and Roger Ailes lead them around by their nose rings.

@Carl: President Obama provided prima facie evidence, his long form birth certificate. The tin foil hat crowd, that would include you and Joe just don't want to believe it. BTW, Hawaii has validated that birth certificate, published announcements of President Obama's birth have been authenticated. Just how much more would you like to see? You and Joe have misplaced anger over who is in the WHITE House.

As is the usual mode of operation, shoot the messenger and ignore the message. This continued deflection concerning Sheriff Joe's revelations only hastens our demise as a Nation so if anyone reading this has one piece of PRIMA FACIE evidence to prove who the usurper in Chief really is then show it or get with the program to uncover what we all rightly deserve.., the truth.

Not interested? Then you are the problem and the reason this Nation is in decline.

Again, if you have any PRIMA FACIE evidence then show it or leave those who are attempting to uncover the pieces to the puzzle to do their work without this incesant whining.

I don't think he's "misunderstood". I think we understand him just fine. He's a racist and a totalitarian.

With respect to your question as to how the Sheriff's authority extends to Hawaii, you miss the point. It has nothing to do with Hawaii. The Sheriff has the authority to assemble able-bodied men to assist in the performance of a law enforcement duty and this is called "Posse comitatus" or posse, for short. One specific duty the Sheriff has is with respect to elections. His investigation of someone who wishes to be on the ballot in his jurisdiction is well within his authority.

@Devlin: OK. What are Arpaio's motives? You make statements about how misinformed Mr. Foley is, but you don't offer a reasonable explanation other than, "illegal is illegal".

Prove your point, especially when you claim others are wrong!

What will follow this current trial is the federal trial. I will enjoy watching Arapio twist.

It should obvious to all, excluding the "wingers", that Joe is using racial profiling. It should also be obvious that he is attempting to deflect his law suits with his nonsensical "birther" investigation.

Those of us who use our heads rather than gastric gas accumulation as the tool of thought can easily understand what Joe is, was and always will be, an out of control public servant who has misplaced hatred for a singular portion of our population.

Arizona, unfortunately, has earned a well deserved reputation because of people like Joe Arpaio, Jan Brewer and Russell Pearce. It is my hope that the voters of AZ send Brewer and Joe back to the private sector as they did Pearce and elect officials who don't have an agenda of hate.

So the DOJ has filed suit against Arpaio alleging various civil rights violations and whatnot.

Ok. It will be interesting to see if this case has "legs" or if it is another instance of selective law inforcement.

In the meantime, is this the same DOJ that refuses to comply with a lawful Congressional subpoena relating to the Fast & Furious investigation? What about the "civil" rights of the hundreds of Mexicans and Agent Brian Terry who were murdered with weapons that walked as a result of this botched program?

Is this the same DOJ that dismissed the case against the New Black Panther Party for voter intimidation in Philadelphia in 2008?

Just wondering.

Foley, either you or your sources, or both, are misinformed about the sheriff's motives, as well as his actions. If there ws anything of substance in htis blog to challenge, I would challenge it. Your high school level attempt at sarcastic critique fails so miserably that it leaves nothing tobe said. Your destroyed yourself.

But you keep trying. Your new and inventive ways of making yourself look foolish are a source of delight to the adults who read these blogs.
