AUSTELL – Monica DeLancy said she decided to join the race for southwest Cobb’s position on the county’s Board of Commissioners when she saw something missing in the other candidates.

“I realized there was not a candidate running who represents the people, and therefore I wanted to run for the people to have a voice,” said DeLancy, 38. “I’m saying the people who have struggled every day, the people looking for work, they want a true candidate to represent them…I’m struggling just like the people are.”

DeLancy, who is facing incumbent Commissioner Woody Thompson and four other challengers in the July 31 Democratic Primary, resides in an apartment on Six Flags Drive in Austell. Some apartments in the Six Flags area with low occupancy rates are being considered as part of the county and the South Cobb Redevelopment Authority’s land acquisition program, in which it could be held for later sale for redevelopment.

DeLancy said her experience living in an apartment would give her a perspective different from the other candidates.

“I know that the families in that area are going to be affected don’t necessarily want to move out,” she said. “I want them to come out and be part of the process.”

DeLancy, who has a bachelor of science degree from Dillard University in New Orleans, taught biology at a charter school in Dallas, Texas, for five years, but has recently concentrated on serving as a community advocate, as well as helping raise her two children, daughter Brianne, 12, who suffers from sever asthma, and 10-year-old son Ernest, who has developmental disabilities. If elected, she promises to serve as a full-time commissioner, not having another job like current Commissioner Woody Thompson, a real estate broker.

DeLancy also takes Thompson to task for serving as a Republican for eight years, before running as a Democrat for the Board of Commissioners seat in 2008.

“The Cobb County Commission needs to be a reflection of the people,” DeLancy said. “It needs to be a connection to the residents so we can inspire more people to come forward and take part in their community.”

DeLancy said she would have dealt with the recent flap over a reapportionment map for commission districts either way it came down. In its once-a-decade redistricting, the state House of Representatives passed a map that would have split the community of Mableton. After a federal lawsuit was filed, a judge eventually drew a map keeping District 4 similar to its current boundaries.

DeLancy said she will work with residents no matter what part of the county they come from.

“Even though I may represent District 4, I have to make sure I can conduct business throughout Cobb, so we can have a positive view for south Cobb,” she said.

DeLancy said she is pleased to see the development efforts going on so far in southwest Cobb, which include an implementation strategy for plans involving the Mableton, Six Flags and River Line areas.

“I know it’s a long process,” she said. “It’s very encouraging what’s taking place. We need to make sure the residents know it is not going to happen overnight.”

While she hadn’t turned in a campaign finance report with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission as of Thursday, DeLancy, who filed for the race in April, said she has raised about $1,400, with most of that going toward her qualifying fee.

DeLancy has worked with several parent-teacher groups at her children’s’ schools, and served on the Georgia Department of Education’s Title I committee. She said much of her support is coming from parents she has worked with.

“My main goal is to make sure our families, our children, are put first,” she said.

Monica has been very supportive in our Six Flags Community. We have worked together over the years to support the Austell Community Task Force and our back to school. The back to school jam empowers parents with positive information and provides hundreds of school children with school supplies every year.

In researching all of the candidates running in this election for District 4, can someone please explain to me how I am able to get confirmation of Monica's high school graduation but nothing confirming her attending or graduating from Dillard University.

In order to be a teacher you must be a college graduate so the answer is yes she has a college degree. You may contact the school to confirm Monica DeLancy attendance and graduating from Dillard University 2601 Gentilly Blvd New Orleans,La, with a bachelor degree in Biology. You may also contact her father who has the checks written out to Dillard University also.

What "research" are you doing? Very rarely will you find readily available information about someone's graduation from a college unless that person graduated from college in a time when Google was prominent. Take a moment and Google, er, "research" yourself and see if you find your own college graduation info there. I'd bet you wouldn't.

Monica DeLancy has worked tirelessly on behalf of many residents in the Cobb County community where she resides. Her courage in going forward to ensure adequate representation for all residents is admirable. Monica DeLancy has repeatedly sacrificed personal time and compensation to improve the lives of others and should be commended for all of her efforts.

Commend Ms. DeLancy for her community efforts - perhaps. But that should not equate into votes. There are hundreds of people in this district that do the same things you have listed and they do it while maintaining full-time employment and managaing a household. They are more than content with a volunteer breakfast or a thank you plaque for service and never ask the taxpayers to provide her a job manageing their county. I would prefer a professional with solid credentials get my vote this year.

Monica is what the community needs. Someone who have the people's agenda first. Once you recognize that then real work can begin. She is right on time. The more you operate without the people's voice, then more people will become less involved and less concerned. Thank you Monica for standing up for the people who are afraid to.

Being content with a "volunteer breakfast" or "thank you" plaque is in no way equivalent to the passion of those choosing to devote their lives and "livelihoods" to public service. As we all know, that role is often a very "thankless" one at that.

Ms. DeLancy simply believes that everyone's voice deserves to be heard-regardless of income or socioeconomic status. To declare that those like Ms. DeLancy are somehow "undeserving" of jobs provided by "taxpayers" is clearly one reason why her platform is essential to this campaign and to the future of Cobb County.

Please describe to me whom you are talking about when you say "the people" and their agenda.

Just what Cobb needs a welfare free loader, she and Bill Byrne would make a great addition to the BOC.

Of course she won't have a job if elected. She hasn't had a job in five years and doesn't do anything to try to find one. Ask her how she makes her money.

What AN INCREDIBLY INSIGNIFICANT yet poignantly malicious question you raised. It is of no business how one provides for her family unless you are the one who is helping her to do so? You kind of people of disgust me, asking all the questions, citing all of the questions with prioviding no answers nor solutions. Instead of ameliorating the situatuion or providing substantial suggestions or even posting worthy inquisitions you just want to provoke an attack or smear campaign. Enjoy your sad existence. How do you make your money?

@ blesseddaily...not sure if you are Ms. DeLancy or just a really good friend, but attempting to read your reply with it's misspellings, grammatical errors and inappropriate use of the occasional big word, it does not bode well for you or her. Additionally, both of the questions posed by South Cobb resident are appropriate for anyone running for public office.
