AUSTELL — WellStar Health System will eliminate 42 jobs at Cobb Hospital in Austell by early July, though company officials hope to reassign those employees. The cuts include registered nurses, people who transport patients throughout the hospital and others.

Spokesman Keith Bowermaster said that the 382-bed hospital in Austell, “although financially stable, has experienced lower patient volumes and an increase in the number of uninsured patients over the past year.”

The health system has a “no-layoff policy,” Bowermaster said. “Through the Well-Star Employee Mandatory Transfer and Displacement Policy, eligible team members will be offered a position within the System. WellStar’s internal recruiters are currently working to place the eligible team members in other positions within 30 days,” Bowermaster said.

WellStar’s 2011 bottom line was $178 million.

Don't worry Wellstar will cont to hire and replace their employees with people who can barely speak english and who you can't understand on the phone or in person at a lower pay rate. Wellstar is doing just fine.

I understand the job cuts. It is a relief to see that WellStar is not firing the employees. It is great that the employees will transfer to another facility within the WellStar system. Thanks WellStar for trying to keep Cobb working.

Seriously? Maybe if the CEO & upper management took paycuts they could actually "afford" to pay those employees that are directly responsible for taking care of patients. But they don't...thank you Wellstar for cutting our (nurse's) certification bonuses, oh and delaying our pay raises (which are not guaranteed) for OUR benefit! If you get shitty care @ a wellstar hospital just know this...you don't get something for nothing. It would be awesome if one of our local TV stations would get involved and report on what ACTUALLY takes place in these hospitals...see where the money goes, see where the money DOES NOT go!!!

This is happening to hospitals nationwide and not just Cobb. The number of uninsured are increasing, and hospitals can't negotiate rates with insurers that quickly to compensate for the loss of revenue.

Counties can't afford to bail out hospitals anymore. Medicare reimbursements are down, and this 30-day readmission rule means that if a Medicare patient is readmitted for ANY CAUSE within 30 days, the hospital doesn't get paid. If a 75-year-old is hospitalized with pneumonia, gets discharged a week later, but then gets hit by a car and suffers massive head and chest trauma within 30 days of his discharge, then the hospital must eat the bill for the injuries sustained from the car accident. Great work Obama on reining in costs of Medicare!

The uninsured are causing a drain???? How many are here illegally? Lower bed volume is a problem because the care at Cobb stinks and money is being wasted. Case in point, when I was at Cobb a few months ago taking care of a dear friend, I asked for some wipes to clean her and was told that floor didn't use them (we were given wipes when she was on a different floor). I was told to use a washcloth and if it was bloody just throw it away. How is that cost effecient? And yes she had insurance! Quit wasting supplies and keep the people that actually do the work!!

Just another reason for assuring everyone has basic health insurance.
Depends

Your comment depends on the reimbursement rates of said healthcare. Currently in Georgia, Medicaid only covers about 80% of cost, leaving the hospital system covering the remaining 20%.

Also, all you are doing is shifting the cost while potentially massively increasing demand. So all who have insurance now will still pay more by way of taxes and in the end they (the paying customer) will have longer waits and less access to care because of an influx of patients in the healthcare system since it will be "free". And if you think I a, exaggerating, just ask a hospital system what percentage of Emergency Room vista are deemed non-emergent and are Medicaid families.

More community services or immediate care centers would be a good way to deal with some of this issue and at a lower cost than insuring people to use an ER for a cold.

So again, it depends.

Why not a similar program to the TFA(teach for America) program the Cobb County school district has started ,...call it DFA(doctors for America),.. bring in some folks fresh out of high school that are thinking of a medical career. They'll work so much cheaper!!

Let me get this straight-"lower patient volumes and an increase in the number of uninsured patients over the past year." So does this mean even if you go there insured, you will not get as much attention, because the uninsured are causing a drain on profits and therefore the personnel will be cut? Great, just great. Has anyone called Rick Pellegrino?

One wonders if the real reason behind these layoffs is that these salaries/wages cut into Wellstar's profits.

wellStar is non-profit

Non profit does not mean they do not make money... it is called "excess revenue over operating costs"... and yes, there are plenty of new uninsured due to people that have not found work and can no longer afford their COBRA coverage or any coverage at all. It is not just the illegals that may be causing the drain.
