There is nothing ordinary about the custom cakes and desserts created by Sugar Plum Visions. Handmade on the Marietta Square, these unique cakes and desserts are more like pieces of art.

“A cake is an essential part of a celebration,” owner Jamie Fine said.

The artisans at Sugar Plum Visions make memorable cakes and desserts. “We try to take what’s important and what that client loves, what their personality is and reflect that in their cake which is what makes it personal and unique for them,” she said.

A flight attendant, Fine took time off from her job for minor surgery after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Recently married to her husband, John McPadden who worked from the home, Fine looked for a diversion.

“I was not used to being on the ground,” she said. “I was looking for something to do during the day to just get me out and about.” Fine signed up for a cake decorating class at a craft store. “I decided to give it a go even though I was not a baker. I did not grow up baking. I did not carry that domestic gene that my mother has, but I did get her appreciation of creativity,” she said. “My appreciation for decorating as an art form was there.”

Fine enjoyed the class and began substitute teaching for her instructor. “I wanted to learn more about the art and craft of cake decorating,” she said.

What started as hobby quickly progressed to something more. “You get a hobby. You kind of get obsessed with it. You want to learn more,” she said. “It’s fun and it’s interesting. I started seeing the possibilities.”

Before opening her store, Fine received instruction through classes and seminars from leading instructors in sugar art including Nicholas Lodge and Colette Peters. She assembled a talented team of distinguished culinary school graduates from Johnson and Wales University, the Culinary Institute of America, New York and the Art Institute of Atlanta who developed desserts based on her mother’s recipes.

“We seek inspiration in anything and everything. My team has that ability, too. That’s why they’re part of my team. We love what we do,” Fine said.

Every client is important at Sugar Plum Visions. “We truly care about our clients and their celebrations, whether it is a first birthday party, a grand opening of a business or a wedding. We really strive to work with each client and their needs whether it is a simple party or an over-the-top type party. We’re glad to serve both types of clients,” she said.

As a long-time customer for many years, the cakes are unbelievable -- delicious and extraordinarily creative. Guests always rave about my party cakes from Sugarplum Visions. Oh, and by the way, the owner has been recognized many times by SBA and SCORE as being an exemplary business owner. No SBA loan write-off here! She's had her shop here on Marietta Square for many years.

I wish you luck but it takes a lot more effort and customers to go from cooking in your kitchen to owning a bakery.

Looks like another small business loan that will have to be written off the books after default in three years.
