Lassiter High School’s athletic booster club and Simpson Middle School are combining forces to create the Cobb Hobbler —grouping together a 5K, 10K and 1-mile fun run — which will make its debut March 24 at Lassiter.
Proceeds from the race will benefit Lassiter’s athletic programs and facilities, as well as Simpson’s programs to promote better nutrition for children.
“It’s a good time of the year to do a race, and it’s a nice event for the community,” said Kurt Ballard, one of the event organizers.
The 1-mile fun run will kick things off at 7:50 a.m., followed by the 5K and 10K races at 8 a.m.
Registration for the event, which is being done online at www.cobbhobbler.org, is $30 for the 10K, $20 for the 5K and $10 for the fun run until March 1. After that point, costs will increase to $35, $25 and $15 for the respective races.
On race day, costs will be $40 for the 10K, $30 for the 5K and $20 for the fun run.
The 5K (3.1-mile) and 10K (6.2-mile) races will begin at Harrison Park, adjacent to the Lassiter campus.
The course will wind its way around the surrounding area before ending at Lassiter’s Frank Fillmann Stadium, with the participants running one loop around the track for the 5K race, and two loops for the 10K.
“The course has some rolling hills,” Ballard said. “It’s challenging enough for the more experienced runners, but not too challenging for everyone else.”
Registration for the event recently began online, and Ballard said the initial response has been encouraging. He is aiming for at least as many as 200 runners when all is said and done.
“So far, it’s been pretty good,” Ballard said. “The 5K has attracted more interest than the 10K, but we hope to get more interest in the 10K as well. About 150 to 200 would be a nice number for us.”
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall and masters (40-and-over) division, as well as the top three finishers in nine age groups (10-and-under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-and-over).
Ballard said he and the other race organizers are hoping the Cobb Hobbler will become a yearly staple in the local race calendar.
“We want to establish this race as a community event, and we want to do it for years to come,” Ballard said.
